Thanks for the trap tuning video j.r. always like your photos.
Still hoping to get up to Alaska soon(2021) ? Had plans this month to celebrate the anniversary in alaska . But with covid and ms.v's medical conditions just don't want to risk it.
Have good season and stay safe out there jr.

Let me sugar coat this

Greeting trappers. Been chomping at the bit to get across the river and it finally happened. Give ya a couple videos leading up to it.

Water froze really high this season but maybe just maybe that overflow will stay under this top layer of ice as the water level drops. Wishful thinking anyway

Good snow with a few trees down along the way [Linked Image]

Pushed myself to the limit trying to make it to the cabin before dark. The canyon was a handful with huge fallouts this year. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Made it to the cabin without incident at 3:30pm as darkness set in tired and hungry. 5 1/2 hours to break trail 39 miles. Had followed a huge wolverine most of the way up the canyon. Didn't see a lot of fur sign but still happy. [Linked Image]

Spent most of the time breaking out trail but did get a few sets in. Didn't see hardly any marten sign but didn't plan on setting for them anyway.

Not sure if I have a new pack of wolves developing or an old pack changing things up. I followed a pack for 15 miles across the flats and a single for 20 miles. Kind of odd where they were but lots of moose and that is what they eat. Hopefully it is a new pack and they don't know about my habits.

Got a checkup this week and gear up to head back out. Good luck and be safe this season

Lovely shots and weather . I find the mood swings of water and ice fascinating . The different in sounds walking on the top layer on solid ground vs the hollow , musical tone of an upper layer with a gap between the lower , be it more ice or water.

Looks like a good season . Be safe, JR.

Good luck out there this season Jr. We have some rivers around here acting and looking the same, another goofy year when it comes to river conditions. Stay safe.

Seasons Greeting Trappers. Took my gal out to the cabin with me on her first trip. She had a few wrecks and got dinged up a bit. She is a trooper for sure and loved the trip even with a couple cracked ribs. She spent the whole trip at the cabin or close. She wasn't real fond of the canyon or the overflow. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Was lucky enough to pick up this young red fox in a cat cubby. [Linked Image]
While she was cabin bound, I worked on some trails and got a bit of gear out. Seems like I have a few more coyotes this year. They wanted nothing to do with my snares at my baits. [Linked Image]

Have pretty good snow so made use of the groomer I had at the cabin. Getting a good base set.

One morning I ran up to check Pee Post Pass and came up on these moose and had a pretty good show.

Setting gear tired and hungry, I paid the price. I joined the #9 Club catching myself in a #9. Wowzer.

That smarted but built some more setters and healed up fine. Got some projects finished up around the shop and heading back out tomorrow with my gal. We are taking the new Expedition LE tomorrow. Kind of excited. Have a great and safe holiday season .

It looks like you were having to bite the Bulliet after that snap with 9. That's good stuff.

I saw your truck at the pull out last Sunday and thought about you out there. Glad to know you have some company on the line! Too bad about the cracked ribs, she must be tough if she's ready to go again already! Good luck out there and Merry Christmas to you!

Happy New Year Trappers... Came off the line with a little more fur for the stretchers. Had Stacey out there with me for Christmas and we picked up a few lynx and a coyote. She was pretty excited. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Took out the new 21 Expedition LE 900 Ace. Unbelievable machine. I never once thought my Skandic 600 Ace was underpowered until getting back on it after riding the new 900. The push button reverse is hard to get used to but really nice. Low range is ridiculously low. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
I redid my burnt post set at the end of the airstrip. The critters seem to have lost interest in it. Freshened it up with a caribou hide and skull. [Linked Image]
Put 3 pee post around it and a few cameras

Took my gal back to the truck couple days after Christmas, grabbed some more bait and went back out. Time to work. Had a marten stealing bait out of one of my wolverine cubbies and kept tripping the 330. After the 3rd time, it finally pinched him. Didn't really wanna trap any marten but Stacey wanted a few. [Linked Image]
Trying to finish a 40 mile loop so I used the ol Skandic as not to beat up my new machine. Old gal took some punishment but got me back to the cabin. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
The moose and caribou were plentiful and photogenic this trip. Lots around the cabin and very little wolf sign. Never had response to the howling yet this season. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Finally picked up a wolf #1 for the season up by my sheep camp. I was beginning to doubt myself. 94# gray male in a pee post along the trail. Never caught a wolf in this set before but it always had that feel . [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Came home to spend New Years with Stacey and put up some fur. So you wanna be a trapper, this isn't a spectator's sport I told her. Gave her a fur handling demonstration yesterday and put her to work with the needle and thread fixing my nicks. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Got a few trap orders to fill and give the ol Skandic a once over and head out early next week. Good luck and be safe out there [Linked Image]

Nice that you have a partner to help make you look good! Glad you are getting some critters.

Thanks for posting the videos. Do you try to wipe out your foot tracks around your sets? Looks like you were walking around them a bit.

Also, I think I may be having issues with wolves smelling my traps and getting shy. How much do you think they are bothered by rust smell? I had some traps that sat out over the summer and probably got some rust on them. I put them in buckets on my sled, then when I got to the site and went to set them, there was a fair amount of rust in the bottom of the bucket that collected from the traps bouncing around in there. Not sure if that is a deterrent or not.
