Lots of things work but none in that situation will work better than finding where the coyotes are entering and/or exiting the field and put in flat sets / trail sets with (fresh) coyote droppings.
Dry fields leave a lot a lot of tale tale sign in the dirt.
I pick up fresh dropping throughout the year and freeze them. I have also dried them and also have re-hydrated them. I use plain rain water and do it right at the set.
Coyote use defecation as a form of communication more than many trappers realize. Meaning, quite often, they do it with a purpose in mind. And that is to let others know who was there...and why.
My thread : "What droppings teach us", showed in detail that very thing for those that read it ! During my beaver control work in the state forest, this summer, I've been picking up coyote, fox(if you can find one) and wolf turds, and storing them in polycarbonate pastry containers that snap shut. Quick tip, as you fill one of those up, keep it up side up in the back of your truck, snapped shut. If it is upside down snapped shut, a rainstorm will allow it to fill with water, making a nasty mess. It was an interesting lesson. Coyotes arent afraid of wolf turds, btw.

That's interesting, trapper les. LT told me that when he had sled dogs, he often used their meat fed droppings to take a good many coyotes for years. They never seem to shy away from them.

Sweet Pea, you saw several set on this thread made with turds, and as it turns out, I have a friend up here who encouraged me to pick up all the coyote turds and what not I could before season. He was a federal wolf trapper up here 30 years ago and has helped me immensely. It took me 3 sessions to reread this whole thread, and just like last fall, I payed a bit of attention to the detail of the sets in the picks here.
In my neighbor hood, there are 3 different cattle ranchers I will be trapping at. All of them have a place where a carcass pile exists, usually covered up, and get dug out by coyotes. These places are where I've picked up alot of turds for use elsewhere, and where I set up snaring later after freeze up, in mid November.

Cool pic Larry, looks like you showed him who's boss.. He's got that look on his face. Lots of great info on this thread from some very knowledgeable trappers!

The coyote control trapper who does the j.o.b. all year long, must know the habits and dealings of the dogs in each season. There are variances, big differences between them. And don't stop when the weather is > 100 degrees here in the southern US. Donna and I team up most often, but we lone wolf it sometimes too. Sometimes she tells me that I get all the "nice" weather trap lines.
