I'm thinking of buying a cheap wire welder for doing trap mods. Probaly only need to get something big enough to do 1/2. Any sugestions, Advice.

I'm not a welder buy trade but willing to learn.

Thanks

.

flux core wire is a pain to get nice welds with, but will be your cheapest bet. I've got a hobart Handler 140 Mig welder that runs gas for shielding. You get a much nicer looking weld using solid core wire and shielding gas. But you also have the expense of renting or buying a tank and having it filled. But I would recommend atleast looking at a welder that can run either gas or flux core wire...that way you have the option down the road if you choose. Here is the one I have

yeah. Flux core will hold. I've done traps this way. You may wish to invest in a cheap angle grinder and a flap disk to clean up some of the spatter. You can sometimes knock most of it of by hitting it with a chipping hammer right away. The best investment I made for welding, was an auto-darkening helmet. You can usually find them for a reasonable price online, and it will make it much easier since you are just starting out.

I have used a light 110 arc without any problem. The bead is good just watch your heat and use light body repair rods. The key is balance between thickness of rod and heat range but once your on to it "no problem's"

My advice...don't mess around...have Smitty (Brian Smith) , Ryan Ruhl or Blak Coyote (Duane Fronek) do it...it will be done right AND pretty,

Thanks for the tip Mike.lol.
To AJ,if you can afford it go with gas, that Hobart 140 handler does a nice job.One thing about flux core,it does good welds, but you'll be cleaning your lens on your welding hood constantly, its messy.

the only problem with depending on others is your depending on others. I am not a patient man you could ask my wife but I dont have time for her to answer(GRIN). I want stuff when I need it and learning a new skill is worth the effort but that is just my thinking on the subject. That being said even paying someone to teach how to do it right is worth the few dollars it takes and sure saves on costly mistakes.

Flux is "smokey" but with practice your welds can look just as good as shielded welds. Its all about trigger time. Takes practice. After I take a wire brush to my welds you cant tell the difference. Actually pound for pound flux makes a stronger weld as well. It burns hotter.
Sheilded is easier because theirs no need for clean up. A Lincoln or Hobart or better yet Miller in the 140/110v size is about right and you can run shielded or flux.
The welds on these drags were done with Flux and their smooth as a babys rump.
