I use alot of 8-32 or 6-32 nuts (new no annealing) on 7x7 3/32 cable for end stops and deer stops hammered on coon/fox/coyote/beaver snares. Never had one fail in 20+ years.

Cool, I havent used them that much but have never had a failure. I use 1/4. I started out using them straight but noticed the threads cutting into the cable a little so now I anneal them and its a much better fit.I can buy the nuts locally cheaper than the ferruls and no shipping,LOL. Just wanted to hear some reviews.

LUV the annealed nuts...MANY times the holding power of the ferruls ...DEFINETLY annealed...I've seen the cut cable before as well..

I personally use ferrules whenever I can. Some applications like combination snare ends (aka tree locks) call for an annealed nut, but otherwise I much prefer using the ferrules. If you check out this place you can get ferrules for almost 1/2 of what most trapline suppliers charge if buy 1000 at a time.

The real reason I hate annealed nuts is putting them on the cable is a pain. I can never get them hammered on so there isn't some frayed cable sticking out the end, ready to poke multiple holes in my hide. I'm no carpenter so I invariably end up sending several flying through the air and if I forget to use a plier to hold the cable, the nut can come flying down the cable and schmuck my hand, so I stick with ferrules.

This topic seems to come up about twice a year and many guys love the annealed nuts and invariably someone claims that the nuts have more holding power than ferrules. So I must ask: "When they use cable for safety equipment, do they use annealed nuts or ferrules and why?"

The holding power of ferrules has been tested in a controlled lab environment and when put on properly (according to Ace) will hold up to the rated strength of the cable itself. I have never seen any sort of non-shade tree mechanic test done on annealed nuts. Not to say that they don't hold, but why the animosity towards ferrules?

There is of course, the cost. The swagers are not getting any cheaper but deals can be found. I got a decent hand swager for $60 off eBay a year ago. Some see this as excessive but when compared to buying and then setting out several dozen 330's, Jakes, MB-X50 or even well modified traps, the swager doesn't seem like such a bad investment.

The 6-32 and 8-32 nuts cost me $.99/lb. in bulk at the local farm store. There are easily 500 in a pound. Like I said I've never had one slip even if they crack a little because I got overzealous with the hammer. They ain't pretty like ferrules crimped on with a swagger and I wouldn't see how you could use them for cable stakes like the annealed 1/4" nuts but for snares they work just fine.

when there is no chance of the wires sticking me in the hands I use annealed nuts. I used to use em right out of the box but would see up to 10% cracked so I string em on a wire and heat them red and let them cool on their own. No failures yet.

I dont dislike ferruls at all. the thing is the nuts are plenty cheaper and I can get them "right now" instead of in three days with no shipping charges. I burn wood in my house so annealing them is as simple as tossing them in the fire and getting them out a while later or in the morning. Ill tell everyone this, the split ring I had straightened out the other day was on a cable stake made with nuts. The split ring gave befor they did.
P.S Lowes has hand swagers for 26$, saw them last night. gonna pick me one up I think.

However, I know LOTS of people who use nuts and never had a problem.

So guess it really don't matter.
ANDY!!!! The issue is NOT having a problem with the nuts...the problem is with the FERRULES!!! I used to "tear up" 3 out of 4 earth anchors I tried to pull up... THAT is why I swithched to the nuts..NOW I have to be careful so I dont TEAR UP MY PULLER!!! MAJOR diff..

KYBOY, i bought one of those hand swagers at lowes last yr. that you are referring to. i didnt like it. i use annealed nuts mostly but i use some ferrules and use a hammer on both. i had bad luck with some yotes that i had used the hand swager on. thats why i didnt like it. thats just me, you might like it just fine.

BRASS NUT!!! MAN... I catch bobcats that'd BUST A MOVE on one of those!!! PLUS they are MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE than regular nuts...UNLESS you've got MONEY TO BLOW... HELLO!!! DUDE... I went to 1/8" cable and 5/16 nuts....your brass nuts'd cost MORE per DOZEN than I pay per POUND!!! (and GUARANTEED no wheres NEAR as strong)
