Here's a picture of where the scent glands are located on a skunk. The chest is pointed away from the picture. The tail is towards the front. The glands are the round purple areas.

Without puncturing them, is there any skunk odor when skinning?

When you make your initial cuts up the leg do you go above or below the vent? How easy is it to puncture the gland? Thanks.

There is just the faintest skunk odor. Nothing more than the normal smells other animals have. I much prefer skunk to coyote.
Just don't pull on the tail...or pull too hard on the hide while skinning or you'll get the pure horsepower of skunk...LOL.

If they do spray when trapped...use the baking soda, peroxide and dish soap mix. They'll be fine. I needle all mine and maybe 1 in 100 sprays.

I cut along the leg towards the rear of the vent. I stop about an inch from the vent. Then I skin all the legs and around to the vent area. Be real careful..don't pull and it'll be OK. You shouldn't stick the knife in. Instead skin around the bags.

I would recommend getting either one of Bob Wendts vids. He does an excellent job of explaining and showing removing the glands and extracting the essence. I would only recommend wearing gloves while performing the operation. Removing the glands first allows you to skin the skunk without worry. Remember, one drop of essence goes an extremely longs ways. Especially if its in your garage......LOL

I watched part of Bob Wendts videos that someone was kind enough to loan me. He uses a razor blade and removed the scent glands before skinning, then uses a syringe removes the essence after removing the glands.
He then keeps the empty glands if I am correct in what I have seen so far of the video, will throw them under a tire as he drives away from the set causing them to release the last little drip near his set.
He made it look easy.

How do you pull the bone out of the tail without releasing?

I caught my first skunk a couple of weeks ago. Following Bob's instruction, I layed the skunk on its stomach, held up its tail, made a crecent cut with a single edge razor blade between the tail and anus. This lets the anus and scent sacs sort of lay out where you can see them and then it is a simple matter to remove the essence with a hypodermic needle and syrenge. Once the essence is extracted, there in no problem in the skinning operation. Do wear gloves and the essence must be stored in a glass container with a metal lid as the essence will eat through rubber or plastic. I keep mine in a jelly jar but it still stinks through the container. Might want to put the container into another container to keep smell down. Bob's videos are really informative and make the process very easy to understand.

I usually skin the tail down about 1/2 way and then use my stripper. Just hold the tail secure and pull. You just don't want to hit the sacks or pull the "root" end of the tail.

I've found that it is pulling the essence that smells!! The actual skinning is virtually odorless. That's why I skin first and then pull the essence after I've saved up a couple skunks. I run a skunk line....so it usually isn't much of a wait.

If you want NO SMELL storage. Bury that glass jar with the essence in a 5 gallon pail of dirt. Any other way...including wax sealing, putting it into up to 3 other jars, military ammo cans..etc....you still will have odor... Been there, done that....LOL.

Do you have to add glycerine to the essence to preserve it, or will it keep from one season to the next?

It'll keep for years just plain. I keep mine in a glass jar, glass lid buried in the dirt in a 5 gallon pail with a lid.
