Does anyone have prolbems with beavers knocking their snares over? In the last few days I bet I have had more than a dozen of my snares knocked down. All the snares are set up in their slides. Some of the snares are being knocked over night after night. Today I took some wire coat hangers and straightened then and used them as holders. I've caught 2 so far, but I should have 12.

Any idea on how to solve this prolbem? The snares aren't moved out of the way or off to the side, they are knocked down and mashed into the mud.

Thanks 8up

It's like they are blowing right over top of it.

My loops are 12-14" is that too big?

Somthing different, If I can't fix this problem I may buy a bunch of 330's and put them in place of the snares. Lets see them blow them over!

Yea, on the slides. Some at the water's edge, some a few feet higher.

I like a 10" loop, submerged 2/3 of the way in front of the slide, fenced on either side with a couple of sticks. This works for me.

everybody seems to like them big loops ... not me ... 8 inch loops are a plenty most of the time ... set like buzzzzzy said at the approach ... if'n you do it right you'll have you a neck snared beaver & keep him in the water where he'll be less stressed until you arive ... or you could set it up on a drowner ... options galore

only time i'll run a big 10'ish inch loop is during summer nuisance beaverin where otter potential is likely ... lets the otter slip through 90% of the time while still catching beavers

if your setting on a steep bank slide ... make sure your snare stays 90 degrees to the trail/slide surface ... if not done this way they'll plow'em over too

possum skinner that is the same way i set up on the beaver. i would much rather keep them out in the water. that 8 inch loop is a neck snaring setup.

A snare for any animal has to be solid. you say you cut some coat hangers to use as suports. What were you using before that? Get some # 9 wire you don't want them flopping around. 12 to 14" is to big a loop.

How high are the snares set off the walk'n surface ?
I Never like to snare at the waters edge. Its easer to snare'm ,eather when they are swim'n Or when they are walk'n. Not do'n something in between the two. Also Its easer to snare any animal walk'n on the flat. Not on a incline.
On dry land walk'n I set a 8"-10" loop 2-3 fingers off the walk'n surface.
Swim'n on the surface. I set a 10"-12" With 1/3rd of the snare loop above the surface.
When beaver are swim'n on the bottom. I set the same 10"-12" loop about 3-4 fingers off the bottom of the channal.
Make sure all your snares are supported solid.

While were on the subject how do you set a snare solid,I never used a snare set but found a spot where the possibilities are looking good for them.
