For coyote or varmints, I like my T.20
First bullet I loaded was a 33 gr vmax, shot it at 4375fps, then went to 35 great Berger at 4100fps

I have alot of really good rifles that are collecting dust because .223 is cheap and kills everything that gets shot with it. Hornady loads a 55 gr softpoint that can be found for about 40cents a round. Compare that to $1 a round and up for the other calibers. If you shoot 1000 rounds you saved $600. You can buy a nice rifle for that.

I also agree , if you don't have a specific use for the 204 or 22-250 you will get more shooting , for lower price ammo and longer barrel life with 223 and there is little you can't do with a 223 the 22-250 will get you a few hundred feet per second faster and flatter but unless your shooting past 250 yards that probably won't matter much.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I have several rifles in all the calibers mentioned above, and all have their strong points, but by far the one I fire the most is my Mossberg MVP in 5.56 matched with a Nikon P223 scope. It utilizes AR style magazines, is 1:9 twist same as the AR and is super accurate. Most people don't think of the 5.56 as a 1000 yard gun, but while shooting at the Seven Springs Sniper Challenge with WWP, we were blowing milk jugs apart at 850 yards with no problems. Plus they are very economical to shoot.

For me its the .223 / 5.56 ..... I roll my own and for the few more feet per second the 22-250 can come up with compared to a warm 5.56 takes a fair bit more powder, the brass is more expensive and does not have the life of the 5.56. Thats my reasoning and I am sticking to it until I change my mind

I have both a .223 In a AR platform and a 22-250 in a bolt action rifle, Both of these guns are spitting seriously tight 3/4'' groups at 100 yrds

I primarily have these rifles setup for coyote hunting and have shot a fair amount of coyotes with each weapon.. More then enough power behind each round to anchor a coyote if you put the round where it needs to be, But if I had to be honest I would pick the 22-250 over the .223 simply because for me Speed is king
Shoot 35+ coyotes with each round and you'll notice the 22-250 is putting them down with more authority

Not knocking the .223 its a very capable round and I have killed more dogs it then my 22-250 simply because it is my dedicated nighttime hunting rifle & it serves me well...
I also do not care about tearing up the fur on these Ohio coyotes, both these rounds can put a hole in a dog that will blow your mind and a 22-250 pushing a v-max is not pretty but to me "Dead is Dead"
If saving fur is on the agenda a smaller caliber or possibly one of these rounds pushing a Soft point would be more ideal but I cannot say that for a fact since I have no experience in that area!

I use a 17 Remington for my fur gun. I shoot a Genco 26 grain rebated hollow point bullet for both Fox and coyote. For my kill/tournament gun I use old Ruger tang safety 220 Swift. I use a SPSX 50 grain bullet

I don’t use it on foxes or coyotes I use it for groundhogs only, I use a CZ 22 Hornet for fox and coyotes

I don’t trap because I want to

Availability, cost, affordable rifles, and effective. You will only perform up to a guns capabilities with a lot of practice. .223 gets my nod. I don't currently own one, and probably never will again. I reload and prefer a .22-250.

The fact you seem set on buying a gun so I won't go into the whole "how to make the gun you already own work."

I agree with the points on most of the above. But for most folks the .223 will be a do all from 13 line ground squirrels to ground hogs to coyote and beaver. The choice of bullet and shot placement are the deciding factor. And the choices are mind boggling and over the counter for that caliber. You can, as previously noted, become familiar with you gun and round and shoot wayyyy out. Most people never will on a game animal unless they create that situation for the fun of doing it. Even less likely back east.

I am interested in how many people are loving their .17 centerfires these days. Interesting.

And if I lived in the OHIO Valley like Ray, I may just let them lay as I saw the fur forecast for his coyotes in Trappers Post last night; wow....nearly valueless in prime. Must be bad color and like a Brillo pad.

Ray I'd be putting up the good one's! I know there few and far between. I look at them like lottery tickets, put enough up and you'll get a winner. Probably not as good as those Minnesota coyotes that Ringbill puts up, and the boys in Alberta! LOL!!! Hope Hornady keeps making there SPSX in 50 gr. Probably one of the best bullets out there, for 22 caliber rifles. V-max and 204's ya better have a lot of dental floss.

Hi ray12, what kind of light are you using at night? Looks like you are having luck at night. I had like 5 or so yotes in my field by the sign in the snow. I went out and called today, nothing. Might work at night here better. I would like to try it. I have called a few times with no luck here, and they are around.
