Thanks Jim, I wish they had shown more on how the beaver were handled when they arrived. I've heard that they grind them, but unsure. Cool stuff anyway!

My understanding of the process is that the makers are after the soft underfur to make the best quality hats, they may very well grind everything they get off the pelt but the main prize is the softer underfur. That's the reason you see most third sections skins go to this market. Heck in this market the hatter trade is buying more than just the third section goods.

I've been to the factory that processes the beaver; it is cut off the leather (and the leather ends up shredded), then the fur goes thru an air process that blows all the guard hairs one way and the underfur another way (only the underfur is used). Beaver is considered the number one fiber for making felt so that is why it is usually in demand and be happy for that.......

more a case of better beaver with underfur, hence the reason they buy third section goods that are more damaged than summer beaver with almost no underfur. Spring beaver from ice out that are badly chewed up are perfect for this type of usage. The buyer when buying is thinking how much underfur is in the pelt, buying more by the pound than for the fur.

Saw an episode of American Pickers where they bought an old top hat made out of beaver fur. The paid over $100 for it as I recall.

the quality of the hat is mark by the X in the hat a 4X would be a cheaper mix of 15% beaver felt mixed with 85% rabbit fur, the best quality hats are 100X or 100 proof meaning made entirely of beaver felt. At one time 20X was used to mean 100 proof but different hat makers use different scales now.
Of course the price reflects the amount of beaver felt in the hat, the more rabbit fur the cheaper the hat.

Ok, I am going to come at this from the other side. I do trap and have been for 6 or 7 years, but i have worn felt hats for 30 years or so. I cowboy and ranch more than i trap and have several good friends that are good hat makers. They primarily use beaver, and I will say in all caps,

CRAP, hit to many buttons at once!! Anyway I was going to say in all caps, THERE IS NO REGULATION ON THE AMOUNT OF XXs THAT IS PUT IN THE SWEAT BAND OF A HAT!! Think of gasoline, it is regulated, some what, and the ethanol ratings go through a check system, or so we are led to believe. There is nothing like this for hatters, only their honesty, which leaves the trade up to the quality of the people making the hats. Now, that being said, hatters buy hat bodies, not fur, and the quality of their hats is only as good as they quality of the hat bodies that they buy. I have owned hats from 10x wool blend all they way up to 50x pure beaver, and can say that they bottom end was of less quality, and the top end certainly lasted longer. Now, with that being said some of the finest hat I have seen made were from mink fur. The maker of those hats said they fur is finer than beaver, and they hooks on the end of they hair are stronger, or tighter, and will hold together better in the felting, and sanding process. Resulting in a hat that is of higher quality, lighter (being it is thinner), will shed rain/inclement weather better, and is smoother to the touch all around. All thought I have not been able to purchase a mink/felt hat, but hope to in the future, I do own 2 hats made by the same hatter and they first one lasted close to 20 years. The 2nd will last an eternity, as it is the one that I wore in my wedding.

If mink hats were so well made and lasting, how come there is not more of a demand for them? They must all go to another country ?

All most see is beaver here.

All of our felt cowboy hats are made from the highest quality beaver, mink, and rabbit fur available.

I guess that explains why I averaged 3.25 on my beaver cause it was the highest quality. They said it was going to the hatter market.
