Luke, I just got mine put away. You have the right idea. Just boil them in baking soda and water for 20-30 minutes. You will notice the color turn a slight gray/dull color. Make sure the water stays at a nice rolling boil. And rinse them off if you get "scum" on top of the mixture. Put outside in some trees or bushes and you will be all set.

Galvanized snares when boiled with lye, soda, or whatever to remove the galvanize will hold moisture INSIDE the cable for a long time. This will cause internal rusting, and the snare may go bad before the problem is noticed. Likewise, if "treated" snares are dyed, the same problem may rear its ugly head.

It is a lot safer, and usually just as effective color-wise to leave your cable or your snares out in the weather. They will gray-out, and blend well at most sites.

I have begun Lightly spray painting my snares after they have grayed. Of course, this must be done well in advance of the season. The colors I use are a light brown or tan, and an olive drab. I don't spray all my snares. The majority of they are used in the "gray state".

Adios,
45/70,

i used some formula 1 on my snares this yr. it has worked real well for me on the 1 by 19 cable especially the 1/16. but i have noticed that it tends to soften the 7 by 7 cable especially the 3/32 and noticeably slowing it down. it may be just me. dont know if anyone else has had this happen or not. i used the brown, its really more of a greener color though than brown. i did boil mine lightly prior to using the f1 so it would stick better with the hope that the f1 would would protect the snare also.

I have also heard of people who leave thier snares under water in a beaver dam or swamp where there is that black mud from rotting vegetation. turns them black if you leave them in long enough.

you didnt say how many snares you were doing but theres not really a set amount of baking soda to use. the more you use and the longer you boil them usually determines the outcome. i usually use around a 1/3 of a box without really measuring. make sure the snares are covered good and rinse well when you take em out. hope this helps.
