Made up a batch last night and treated my foothold and so fare I'm liking it. I can't smell anything and I've barely made a dent in the 2gal I made.

50/50 mix of rustolum and paint thinner.

Can you do rusty traps with that Wolfie, or do they have to be shined up?

Yes you can. I use heavy rust primer and flat black pain. Thin it down and good to go. Ive found it works better with the primer mixed with the paint.

I did this to all my traps this year and I really liked it as well. No paint, just the primer. Thinking about doing a few in white paint now for the winter/snow season.

Awesome, thanks. I used this (I used paint only) on some new traps this year but have some with a light rust coat on them that I was going to dye with walnuts. I might just dye my DLS's and use the rustoleum on the rest.

I used it for my traps for the first time a month ago, but I mixed it WAY too thin. It took 5 dips to get it done because I was too cheap to buy more paint. Other than that, I'm happy with it.

I used this method this year too. I really like it, and yes, I did all my traps including my K9 traps. Disclaimer- I did all my traps in June and then let them hang outside (covered) for 2 months before putting them into their totes.

50/50 mix (primer/thinner) worked very well for me. Can't give an opinion on paint/thinner ratio yet

Acetone works better than thinner. IMHO Drys quicker, less smell, down side is it evaporates so fast, you have to add more& remix.

I dipped all my k9 traps for the first time this year and really liked it. I used water based paint and primer and then dipped in full metal jacket. Did it in aug when it was warm. Got 13 coyotes during my 2 week trapping vacation.

Okay. All you folks have tried this paint and thinner mix. Now how does it compare to dying and waxing. #1 Does it hold up better #2 Had any digging problems. #3 Do you have to do this every season just like dying and waxing?

I'm running an experiment with it this year. Some pre-rusted, some right out of the box (just washed). Didn't wax any of them.

Two coyotes in one trap and only a few expected scratches are seen. Haven't had a trap dug once. A couple of out of the box traps (water traps) did get shined up a bit from a raccoon. I'd expect to probably re-dip next year, but it's fast and easy.

#1=yes Ive got traps in there 3rd season of use (water sets) and still look good.
#2=No
#3=waxing yes repainting no.
* all my traps had a good coat of rust on them prior to painting. Not sure how it holds up if the traps are new with no rust.

I started with 2 gallons paint and 4 or 5 gallons Naptha. I mixed it thinner than 50/50 and kept adding as I went. I likely should have added more as I went. The tray I used was around 16x36 so I think the large surface area led to a high Naptha evaporation rate. It left a nice thin coat on everything. I have 3 gallons paint and part of a Naptha can left.

I did 4 dz Ram wolfmasters 34" long, 5dz Ram #1 30"?, 6 #3 bridger, 18 330's, 110- 9' 1/8 anchor cables, 12 6' conibear stands, 30' chain, 12 ram stands.

50/50 rustoleum and acetone here.
I won't go back now, this stuff Rocks. Dries fast, doesn't smell like gas, holds up well, no fire, done with everything in couple of hours.
No diggouts, but I didn't have that with anything I used before including logwood or dips.
Coyotes, fox, traps work fine.
Bright pink coloration here, makes fun pics for my boys.

I have been dipping my water traps for years in the Rusty Primer, and Flat Black Rustoleum. I thin it down with white gas (coleman fuel) and use 2 1/2 to 3 gal to thin down. I like it a little thicker than water. First time the traps might need to be dipped twice. If it is to thick you will need to clean all your dogs and pans. On body grips the dogs and triggers can get stuck if to thick. You can work them lose. This stuff hardens and stays on good. I use gas to thin because Acetone evaporates to fast in our hot summers. In fact all thinners evaporates faster than you would think so I keep extra close by. I do all of my water traps and I trap in Brackish water. High salt content. It protects my traps very well. I still boil dye and wax my land traps. Might be more tradition for me than necessary but it works.
The paint dip will last for years if you keep it sealed and don't let it freeze. At 35.00 a gal you want it to last. Just to give you an idea, with a new batch thinned with 3 gal of white gas I dipped 80 - 1 1/2 traps, 12-4#, 20-DLS 5#, 18-CDR, 60-110, 60-220, and 150-330's. I had close to 2 gal of the mixture left.

I really like it. I use 50/50 rustoleum rusty metal primer/paint thinner to dip mine.

When ready, I dip in 50/50 quality oil based paint. I use different brand paint brands and colors. Usually a brown/green/olive base paint. It holds up very well. I then use a dish sponge that has been filleted and fingers cut out to touch the trap while I hit it with spray paint for a camo pattern.

It's very important to keep an eye on the mixture, because the thinner will evaporate quickly during ideal painting weather. You don't want the paint to get too thick.

Trying not to repeat last two seasons so of pulled all my traps due to all the weather fluctuations. Didn't see much point in setting just to have washed out sets , know what I mean. Besides been too busy with the farm lol

If you bought a half gallon of Rustoleum flat black and 1/2 gallon Rustoeum rust metal primer, and a gallon of acetone you'd have more than enough to do your traps.

Thanks for sharing guys. Can you tell me why it has to be primer and not the oil based paint? Also just to clarify the paint doesn's melt off in the wax? Or do you melt the wax over water and pull them up thru? Or no need to wax?

You can use either. I know a guy who was no doubt the best coyote trapper in my area and he did all his traps with bright blue rustoleum. They sure we're pretty. LOL

I'm probably a little slow.....but are you guys dipping in the diluted primer and then subsequently in the diluted paint for a couple of coats, or just one or the other?

I used two gallons of acetone and one gallon of primer for rusty metal. I poured what was left back into the empty cans of acetone.

I had a bad go around with the 50/50 acetone/rustoleum primer this last time. I did a first batch and all went super well. I was going to do another batch in a couple weeks so I put the mix in a cat litter bucket with what I thought was a lid that would seal good enough, WRONG lol. When I went to do the 2nd batch it was chunks and ruined. So then I bought some new empty paint cans and switched to low odor mineral spirits, then sealed the left over mix in the paint cans. Worked great. So, I highly recommend making sure you seal the leftover dip real good!
