And what the heck are they good for?

Milk, eating, fur, leather

Long story short: while going door to door today I ended up bringing two home. Don't ask! Wife still doesn't know!!

Can I skin and eat them? If so, some recipes would be great!

I don't have any but there's definitely a meat market around here. Milk and cheese too.

I have a question for goat owners too. Is it a requirement to build a fence out of pallets if you own goats?

We raised a few when I was growing up, I've never eat any, we milked ours, and there was a woman that would make butter and cheese out of the milk, delicious! Do you have a pen with electric fence? They can get out of most fences, if there not tall enough or if they don't have electric.

I have a nice holdoing pen and 1.5 acer lot that has fence that could and has been electric. Its a standard wire fence 4' tall. I'm gonna wrap it with chicken wire to keep rabbits in. Could easily double as goat pen?

Woven wire or barbed wire? Woven wire, you probably good to go, if it's bar Ed wire, that's okay if the strands are close together. 1.5 acres sounds DS like plenty for only two goats, if there isn't much grass and browse in there, you'll have to get some hay and feed. Good luck!

Use them as a tax right off. You are now officially a farmer. Like Hupurest said sell to middle easterners. It is the common practice around here.

I doubt they will have milk right now, unless they just had their young pulled off them. If they do, make sure you strain the milk and pasteurize it before drinking it.

Yes, you can skin and eat...

I prefer to get my kid goats fat first... I usually kill a goat or 3 every year, at about 80 lbs, but I eat weathers, casterated males...

I quarter mine, cut the ribs off the loin, then cook them low and slow, much like a pork
shoulder... I make a basting mix of, one beer, 2 lemons, 1 onion, 1 or 2 sticks of butter, garlic and pepper to taste...

As I am cooking the goat I basted it with a small mop every hour or so... cook until meat starts pulling off the bone...

Goat is the #1 eaten meat in the world... good stuff....

They are fine eating, save the bacon for bacon. If I cooked you a platter of deer and one of goat you might not tell which was which. The milk takes getting used to, I think. If a rabbit can get through a fence a goat or sheep can too. Never tried electric on goats, might work. If there is any thing at all to jump up on or climb the goats will. car, truck, shed roof etc,

There’s an old saying that if your fence will hold water, it MIGHT hold goats. There’s a reason for that saying. They’ll climb right over/through normal woven wire. ELECTRIC.

Or is the silver skin a non issue as far as toughness is concerned. And is the fat edible like beef fat?

If they get out...JUST ONCE...they will immediately proceed to the newest most expensive, unblemished vehicle and turn it into your OLD trapping vehicle. And they will have fun doing it. If there is a male, castrate immediately. I can't stand the milk...tastes like goats smell, is the best I can describe.

none issue...

The fat is edible... but trim it... I don't like gobby fat on my goat, but it will cook off to a good crispy finish...

I hope not, I have mine in a 2 section pasture... with net wire fences... some new, some old... patch holes when I find them...

Can they find a hole... sure can and do, but I have about 3 gentle nannies that will follow you any where... I also feed every morning, so they come to the house, every evening and bed around here in a field behind the house...

I feed day old bread and corn... I have about 30 nannies and 2 billies...

We've had milk goats before, and never bothered pasteurizing. Just strain it, drink it fresh, and don't drink milk from sick goats. The "goaty" taste that goat milk from the store has is only a problem when it's not fresh. Otherwise, it's sweeter than cow milk.

watch them for runny poop. they get barber pole worms and will take them quick. vets will know what to give you. if they start dropping anything except round pellets like deer get the wormer in them quick.

Goats are not always the escape artists many seem to think they ALWAYS are. Ours stays in a normal page wire fence just fine.

LOL...no I didn't mean how the billies smell! More like a horsey type of smell/flavor. I'm "racist" towards goat milk I supposed since I grew up and still work on dairy farms and don't even like the taste of store milk as well. The pasteurization ruins the natural sugars and homoginization makes it have a mouth feel similar to goat milk which does not really need it,

just quarter them out and throw them in the smoker like fresh ham. I raised 3-400 a year and I always said it would be easier to fence a field mouse than a goat

I just bought two pigmy goats for my wife. I like them so far, but they are definitely capable of getting into trouble.

I won't be eating these but I've eaten a lot of it over the years. Mostly young goats over a ground fire in Mexico or Argentina. Really great, but an older one might need the crockpot. Once I ate a homemade chile verde from goat with home made tortillas. It was the stuff of legend.

I used to know a guy in Washington who raised goats for backpackers. Tame goats that would follow a backpacker and carry a load with a pannier. He bred goats and sold them as kids so they got attached to the new owner. His wife sewed and sold goat panniers. Nice little side business.

Goats are good eating. My son raised a few for several years & butchered one or two every year.

Use to raise them. Did for 14 years. Had a great pet market except billies and wethers. You need only so many billies. Price then was higher than beef at the sale barn. Goats do better on weeds and brush. They'll eat grass if starved. They love multiflora rose and will eat thistle when it is young. Rent them out. Not all goat species are problem free. What kind did you get?

I was kind of wondering if they could be trained to haul traps?
Also kind of curious if they could be trained with a pet safe collar to stay in yard?

Maybe. Are you in the suburbs? I used to live in the middle of nowhere, and our goats just roamed free on our land. They never went far. Worked fine, until they learned how to open the screen door one summer. Goats are great, but they have no place in the living room. LOL

We just moved to no where Indiana. But that ain't saying much! Still have 3 neighbors within a 1/4 mile of me.

Realy can't let things roam free here anymore. Where I use to live I'd be worried about someone calling law. Here I'd be worried about someone else eating it before me.

I would bet the collar would work, but...they have pretty thin skin and like a dog you can't leave it on very long or the prongs would likely irritate the necks.
