From my understanding we still have to wait they're going to come up with a better solution for the bill. Because the bill is all over the place with public land and the punishment. I'm I correct?

It's funny how none of the supporters of the bill had no evidence or pictures of their beloved pets that they claimed got caught in a trap, not even the veterinarian that claimed a pet that he couldn't save and later died named Sonny which was one of a clients Labrador retriever that got caught on a trap.

You're correct they are creating a sub committee to try to iron out the wrinkles and remove the gray areas before sending to the judiciary committee (waste of tax money in a state that's reducing teachers pay/work) to figure out if this bill will work or not. They have until 3/18

The bill is terribly written. They added an amendment that clarifies "public land". Basically they want ALL land that's not privately owned or tribal land. The sponsor opens and says our G&F officers are short handed already gives a few examples then later goes to say they will be the only ones trap. I'm surprised no one used that against him.

I thought he amputated the dogs leg. Our G&F director did great.

Looks like they are really trying to get this passed or I think they would have just thrown it out like the last one.

Yeah it does. But they also want both sides to win.

The wrinkles they are trying to iron out is which public land they can close to trapping and how to cite and punish a trapper that gets caught on that public land. How do we win. If the antis get an inch we lose a mile. They will keep chewing at it every year until they get what they want. Nothing but it getting thrown or voted out will we win.

TravC, see above comments.
You're right SWT. I thought there was some other consortia too.

Hopefully it gets stalled or tossed out. Our other hope is the SJR15 with the amendment to add trapping to it. SRJ15 is a constitutional amendment to make hunting and fishing a right

I was looking to see if any of the bills mentioned were on scheduled for tomorrow and it looks like SJR15 is on the schedule for tomorrow morning. I hope they add the amendment to add trap(ping) to it. SJR15 is to make Hunting fishing and harvest wildlife a state right. I emailed the sponsor and others to add trap(ping) to the SJR.

I tried the recorded webcast and in that 3 hr meeting they didn't talk about half of the items scheduled. Not sure if they didn't make it back from lunch.

TravC, I was looking at it again and it might save trapping which is included under 2 key phrases used in the SJR: "harvest wildlife" & "traditional means and methods". I think those phrases although vague might be helpful.

For those that want to look at SJR15 I pasted it below, which is very short. I bolded and underlined one particular sentence.

SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 15
53rd legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - first session, 2017
INTRODUCED BY
George K. Munoz

A JOINT RESOLUTION
PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO ARTICLE 2 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF NEW MEXICO BY ADDING A NEW SECTION TO PROTECT THE RIGHT TO HUNT AND FISH.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
SECTION 1. It is proposed to amend Article 2 of the constitution of New Mexico by adding a new section to read:
"A. The residents of New Mexico have a right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife lawfully. Wildlife belongs to this state and is held in trust for the benefit of the residents of this state.
B. Exclusive authority to enact laws to regulate the manner, methods or seasons for hunting, fishing and harvesting wildlife is vested in the legislature, which may delegate rulemaking authority to the state game commission. No law shall be enacted and no rule shall be adopted that unreasonably restricts hunting, fishing and harvesting wildlife or the use of traditional means and methods. Laws and rules authorized under this section shall have the purpose of wildlife conservation and management and preserving the future of hunting and fishing.
C. Lawful public wildlife harvesting and fishing shall be a preferred means of managing and controlling wildlife.
D. This section shall not be construed to modify any provision of common law or statutes relating to trespass or property rights."
SECTION 2. The amendment proposed by this resolution shall be submitted to the people for their approval or rejection at the next general election or at any special election prior to that date that may be called for that purpose.
