Hi I have a 160 acre deer property that I have trapped the coyotes on for a few years.
But some donkey is dumping off dogs out there and they keep getting in my coyote sets I have turned 4 loose in 2 weeks no collars on em
Do you guys have any advice on trapping coyotes and avoiding stray dogs

Take the dogs to the pound

Caught one twice about three weeks ago, called the pound the second time when we described it it fit the description of a missing dog. Folks came right over. I had them hold it while I took the trap off this time

The lady hugged me, and tried to pay me a reward for catching it. It was from 2 miles away and had been missing for 5 days

Take them to the pound and tell them how you got it

Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

In the Western part of this state that I hunt, the locals assume if the dog's roaming the woods it's chasing deer. They don't like their deer being chased.......

I would try the pound first, as has already been said. But that's way too many dogs plugging up your traps!

Do what you want with them, just don't let them go to remain a problem for your future.

Tough call. I'm a softy when it comes to dogs too. I make an effort to contact owners when I can, but will turn them loose once, then to the pound, if available.

The whole idea of people letting their pets run aggravates me, the law says dogs must be leashed in many states so once that dog is running it is in violation of the law. So to the pound is acceptable

Cats are a bigger problem here. Lots of feral cats around, the farm cats that get caught are easy to distinguish as they just meow at ya. The feral go bat poop crazy

Nice cats get released. Neighbor once pulled up to me as I was getting out of the truck to check traps and said "thanks for doing the right thing". I looked at him a little puzzled. He says "you caught my wife's cat a couple of dAys ago". I said oh that little black and white one. He says " yes thank you for letting it go, I really appreciate it. She thought it got caught by a coyote and escaped, and I told her nope looks like it was in a trap and was released". Told him I can tell when they're feral or pets and the pets get a pass But it ticks me off that they are running. Had to explain to my son one time on a pet cat that didn't end well that it is the owners fault and nobody else's that their cat wasn't coming home

When I catch cats in cages while doing ADC work. ^^^^ above is canine fur trapping ^^^ if the customer doesn't recognize the cat it goes to the pound and if the owner looks there they will find it !!

I can relate to you. I was cutting brush today, and a dog (some sort of pitbull mix), confronted me in the woods today. Not a good situation. I didn't have a gun or pepper spray, but luckily a chainsaw. This was the meanest dog I've ever seen. I'm not sure what to do, but I'm not tolerating another experience like I had today. It had a collor and I think I know what neighbors it is. It was a long ways from any house today. It was protecting it's territory. Unfortunately that territory is our rural hunting property. I wouldn't doubt it's chasing deer. Kinda sad, but we're a bit afraid to go on our property now, or to bring the little nephews. It'll probly end up in my trap someday. I don't know how I'd bring it to the pound. I talked to the vets office today and they suggested calling the cops. Thankfully 1 of us saw it b4 it had a chance to pounce. I had earmuffs on and was bent over cutting low brush. I'm pondering contacting the likely owner. But then I'm a bit afraid the owner will blame us if the dog ever disapears. The vets told me not to try to release this nasty beast from a trap. Dogs, to some people, are mans best friend...but they can be a real pain. I hate to start a war with the neighbor, but I think I may have to call authorities. I suppose I could call the pound & see what they recommend.

Thanks. I think our laws protect me too, but Im not sure. That makes me so mad. Ya shouldnt need a power saw, gun, or pepper spray just cuz a neighbor cant control their darn dog. Itd be 1 thing if it was a poodle, but this thing meant business, and I wasnt buying it, so to speak. Now im nervous to bend over and set a pocket gopher trap there.

Carry a nice hardwood walking stick with you when you go back.No dog is a match for a man with a club.
Give him a good skelpin with the club to show him who is the boss and he wont bother you ever again.
That dog was acting that way because he sensed your fear of him.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Do what you think is right, you are the one who will have to live with your decision. As far as I'm concerned, law on my side or not I will not let myself be afraid to use my land because of someone else's dog. Period!

I hope you get the situation resolved quickly, and all works out well for both parties. Good luck!

Thanks. Ya shouldn't need to carry a powersaw to walk on your own property. Some are telling me to call the cops or the pound. I'm not going to try to take it to the pound myself.
