I like the older style blake and lamb wire muskrat stretchers myself. They don't have the three prongs on each arm.Just the single.

I know you side wire. But wood is preferred on today's market and will help u get the most for your rats. How many rats are you putting up in a season?

All wood for me too. I like the look of the finished pelt a lot better on wood. I have some wire stretchers, but I don't use them and will probably end up giving them to a kid one of these days.

I watched fur buyers at a sale on Saturday and they all had measuring boards for length. At the local level where computers don't scan for surface area, can it make any difference on board or wire? I know nothing. Just asking and I know this has been kicked around before.

I think if you are selling in the country, there is an argument for wood.

I know that NAFA uses a light table to measure automatically, no need to use wood if shipping to them, that I know for sure.

If I have a few rats, I will put them on wood. If I have a couple hundred to do, they are going on wire. No way am I going to board that many rats.

I use Sleepy Creek wire muskrat stretchers. They work well for me.

To answer your question. I have several dozen Peerless stretchers that work well. I also have a dozen or so Sleepy Creek stretchers that are good. I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference as long as they aren't all bent out of shape..

I don't sell a lot of rats compared to some (400-500) but if you are selling in the country, most buyers I have spoken to or sold to prefer wire. That is what their customers want. I do put my bigger 2x and 3x on basswood boards though because you do not have to stretch them very hard on wood. LLL

A few years back at a fur sale a lady came in with rats that were boarded.

If I remember right, she didn't get as much as others. I think she had 60-70 rats.

Got to admit they look nicer.

I use wire for rats.I had talk with the ones from NAFA years ago when I sat in there fur demo. They say it dose not matter to them if it is wood or wire.As for wire make sure you pin the nose of them because other wise the nose will slip to the mouth and make the rat shorter then if you where to pin the rats nose. Also for the ones that dose not fit on the rat wire ,I use the coon and fox wire I have that is peerless and put them on there like I do for my possum and some of my skunk.

Thanks I'm in the process now of switching over to wooden stretchers.

my son and I will put up 150-200 a day on wire. if theyre done right, theres very little difference in square inches between wood and wire. clothes pin the noses as stated above, then pull both sides down tight and pin those also. they'll be almost square on the bottom back side. auctions scan for square inches, but no one in the country does, and they'll go by the length, so any gain in square inches with wood stretchers is void with a country buyer. hope this helps.
