Had a mink in a cage far from any real water just a few stock dams around the old farm place is full of old buildings and heavy machinery. Must of been looking for rats/mice. Spayed some then settled down a bit it was chucking at me then it started to scream at me it was a hoot. Popped the door open and it slinked along the building then into the tall grass!

I also get one in a cage set at an old building site from time to time Jerry. I suspect like you, that they have good mouseing in those spots and little competition. Mine tend to be young males but have caught a few females also.

Have caught a couple in hedge rows most likely hunting pack rats and cottontails I think.

I think the only ones I've had really scream at me have been in cage traps.

Law Dog thank you for that picture. I'm now totally convinced that I have seen a mink on two different occasions on a farm I lease, just never had a good in the wild picture to compare to. I seen one once in the middle of the day crossing the road and one once after dark coming out of a hay bale stack.

Cool pictures and story. The first time I heard a mink scream was way back when I was a pup. It was early December and I got a brainstorm to go mink hunting (that was legal for years in Michigan). I walked about 3/4 of a mile around the small lake we lived on and took a seat on a log along the inlet stream to "our" lake. I honestly hadn't sit even long enough to get bored when I spied a fat mink headed my way from upstream. I waited until the beast was about 30(?) yards out and let loose with the Winchester single-shot 20 gauge! At the shot that mink let out a scream and dove into the creek. I'd like to say I found him and got a healthy sum for his pelt, but the truth is I never saw him again. The whole area smelled so minky from his musk that it was nauseating. I had apparently scared the stink right out of him.

This old farm and equipment storage area is ideal for them in the dry years, we are dry here more then having a lot of standing water around. Tall grass, junk piles half collapsed sheds and buildings are great habitat as it's full of mice, rats and rabbits.

Years ago, we raised mink. So, I was pretty used to that ear-piercing squeal. I once caught a rat, not a muskrat, but a brown rat in a water set that was alive. It had a similar squeal when it saw me and knew I didn't have good intentions when it came to its well-being.
