I recently picked up a little Suzuki 2hp I plan on mounting it on the side of my canoe. I've looked at a lot of pictures of homemade motor mounts and have a few questions for the people who have did this. I'm planning on using 2x4's and sandwiching the lip of the canoe between them and mounting the motor off of that. The 2x4 would be just behind the rear seat. Will a pine 2x4 be strong enough, or will it split and break? I was thinking on laying the 2x4 flat across the canoe instead of standing up right, and then bolting a piece of 2x4 standing on edge to attach the motor. What kind of mounts have you used to mount a motor on standard canoe?

I've only done it with trolling motors. I used pine 2x4 and put it on one side and claimed it down. Never had a problem.
If you have enough thrust to damage the 2x4 your probably going to have a bad day in the canoe.

5 HP on a canoe, were you able to plane out or did you crash and explode like the race boats?
