This has seemed to be a real messed up spring for making syrup. Any of you other saps making much? I haven't even tapped any trees. Just was looking at the forecast and trying to decide if it was worth it to tap a couple and try to make a little bit of syrup or not. I just don't know, with the way the Temps keep going.

I had a short stretch in February were the maples sapped really good, but for the most part it was a bad year. The sap I did gathered made really good syrup though. It was a nice light color.

We tapped 80 trees and made our first collect and got about 240 gallons. WE collected to day and got about 190. If we get 2 more collects we will be lucky. I'm betting we will be cleaning up by Saturday.

Not Mn but eastern WI. We have had a strange year. Running pretty good the last 2-3 days.
We have 400 trees tapped and have collected about 4300 gallons. Sap is running from 2.4 to 3.1 % sugar. We had a long stretch of about a week with not much happening. we want to get our buckets emptied out good by Wednesday evening b4 the next cold snap comes through.

Got 60 gallons yesterday on 100 taps. Weather is goofy this year. Never get two good days in a row.
Frozen again today. Going to boil tonight have about 100 gallons to do.

Really ran couple a weeks ago here when it got to the high 50's - mid 60's. Only tapped 8 stiles but collected 3 - 6 gl jugs in 3 days/ 2 nights, then it froze off again.

I cooked off 8 gallons today. Should get another 8 tommrow. Will pull Fri and with any luck probably end up with about 20 gallons.
Our temperature sensitive dump vale dumps about 1 degree less then then finished. So we re heat and filter and then bottle.

Just drove to Minneapolis from michigan. Saw thousands of buckets and a lot of pipeline just from the highway. Someone must figure it is worthwhile. It is gonna be 18 below at my place tonight. Weird year for sure.

Yesterday was 742 gallons and today was 885 gallons!! Sugar content seems to be dropping but sap is clean and not foamy. I hope we get a good run this weekend as that might be the last run with good sap. Hit about 5k after today but still about 3k below last year which was a record year for us. Last year we averaged about 22 gallons of sap per tree and with our sugar content that was .6 gallons of syrup per tree.

Can you buy bulk finished un bottled syrup from your buyer? If so how much per gallon.

I will ask him tomorrow if I drop off some sap. He has a strong market to retail stores and other retail outlets. We take sap to him and we get 50% of the syrup made from our sap. Each load is sampled for sugar content and with the rule of 87 we get syrup based on our sap quality. We pay for the bottling and the bottles also. We help with the bottling when we can or when it works for him. He also buys sap at 15 cents per point if we don't want the syrup. We are better off to find markets for our syrup if we can.
Our sugar content today was 2.3 to 2.5 and yesterday the average was 2.7.
We sold 3 k to a different person last year for a bit more per point but he has limitations on when he can take the sap and this year he wants a thousand fewer gallons as he has a considerable inventory from last year with his ag tourism business.
To date the person getting most of the sap has cooked 25k to date. Some of the guys bringing sap in a few miles north of us are only averaging 1.6 or 1.8 sugar content this year.
