Nice stuff as always, love seeing those rams. One idea for your overflow traps, get a bucket of ash from your stove, or some dirt from an exposed bank. Spread a blanket of it over your buried trap and the sun will start rotting it out pretty quick this time of year. Come back next week you won't have to chop so much.

Good stuff, JR. Fingers crossed that the snow holds out so you can do some exploring this spring.

Made a trip out to the cabin this weekend. Took my neighbor with and let him ride the Tundra. Left early in the morn while the temps were cool and the trail still firm. Some other prick didn't and tried to go out with a big UTV side by side on tracks during the heat of the day. Left the first 15 miles of the trail a mess before he turned around. I wished I'd had caught up to him or maybe not, he probably wasn't worth the time or trouble.

Hoping karma will catch up to him. Built some stout bear shutters for the cabin windows out of steel. Got them installed and they worked great.

This was the reason for the shutters. Tracks all over the windows but never broke them.
DIdn't see any fresh wolf sign but lots of coyote and wolverine tracks. Seen a few Dall rams at a distance
Spent most of the trip just covering some country exploring.

Had a little trouble with this little water crossing. Snow flap got caught up on the studs of the track and wouldn't let me back up.
Time to tear down the sleds and inspect and service for next season. Thanks for following the journal this year and have a safe and productive summer. Lets kill some bears and catch some fish. AKhowler out.

Great way to end the season JR but don't leave us hanging until next winter. You'll get back out there one way or the other so keep us posted.

Thanks for the awesome photos and stories, first thing I looked for when coming on.

Awesome and it's kind of surprising there was no wolf sign with all the action you had out there. I feel your pain re the trail some guys make it tough to share!

I forgot to post the pics of #12 on the board. That other pack really worked him over good. Next season the SMG pack with pay dearly for what they did to poor old #12.

Here's a few of my little tricks for stretching wolves on the boards. May be a bit different from what most do but seems to work well for me. I skin most all my wolves for taxidermy. My stretchers are a bit wider in the nose than most specs. They work better for me when stretching and drying the lips. The forms are made of heavy cardboard and last for a couple years and easy to stick pins in and remove. Just an idea for any newbie's looking to put some wolves on the boards.

JR - When you're doing your wolves do you skin the head from the jaw side? I find it easier to get the thin sections of the gums by doing it that way. I also had my taxidermist tell me to leave the cartilage in the ear as they like it stiffer. I try to clean skin wolves which takes longer but the taxidermist seem to love it.

My last wolf of the year was work over by other wolves pretty bad . Felt bad for him but reassured him I would take care of it for him . We use poster board for front legs pretty cheap and last for years .

What size lumber do you use to make wolf stretchers? I find 1X4 to thin and if you use 1X6 there is more to pin to and you don't have to mess around with extra wood except for the tail and front legs.

Brian.. I don't skin the wolves faces through the mouth. I have but mostly hang them by the back legs and skin them down to the front shoulders and then I flip them over and hang them by the hide and let the weight of the carcass pull itself out the rest of the way.

Muskrat411... I use 1"x 4" wide cottonwood milled lumber for my wolf boards. I may try 1 x 6 on the next batch I make. I usually put a piece of plywood between the boards to pin the tail to.

So against my better judgement, I decided to make one last trip out to my cabin to haul out my new solar panel and aluminum corner flash AKA bear proof corners. The river looked great when I crossed and the flats were losing snow fast but very doable.
Dry Creek and the mountains were still in full winter mode and the riding was awesome.

Got the work done around the cabin and went out looking for some shed antlers. Snow was still a bit to deep to find any but made for some great riding. Seen lots of mating ptarmigan.

Got up yesterday morn and left pretty early to beat the heat of the sun. I had noticed we lost a lot of snow over one day with 50 degrees and 30 mph winds. The flats got bear fast but the 4-stoke Tundra did well and never got hot once.

Go to the Tanana River a little sore and beat up from the ride but happy and in one piece. Dropped down on the river and smiling finishing up the last and latest trip I've done and this is what I see when I get to the far side of the river.

Oh (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman).... One day and the river went out... Wow.. I traveled down river a bit knowing better but just hoping there'd be a bridge. Nope. Here's my conundrum, one of my rules is never to haul fuel out from the cabin. If I have enough fuel to get to the truck then don't top off with fuel. Well.... If I'd had topped off at the cabin, I could have turned around and went back 40 miles to the cabin and left the sled and gear there safe and sound and called for a plane to come get me. I didn't and didn't want to risk running out of fuel somewhere in between where I could't get a plane in. So time to call in a favor. I hate to ask for help but sometimes it's time to man up and admit you need help. I had cell reception and was only 2 1/2 miles from my truck and the highway. Quick call to my buddy Doug and he said he was just changing the oil in his Cub and would be out there in a few hours. I marked out a landing zone on the overflow in the middle of the gravel bar and ran my sled up and down it a few times, dumped my gear that I didn't want to leave and then took my Tundra and sled over and stowed it over in Stan the Mule Man's abandoned old hay barn. Should keep the bears off it till I can get over there with the Airboat. Walked back out to the river and got a big ol fire going.

Took a nap and woke up without my shirt and in a fricking huge sombrero. What the heck is going on and how long have I been sleeping. Anyway, Doug shows up and we had a good laugh.
Short flight across the river to a lake where I walked back down the highway and got my truck. Good friends will drop what they are doing to help a friend in need. There wasn't any him'n or hawing, he just asked if I needed anything and said I'll see ya when I see ya. Learned a little bit on this trip like maybe ought to pack my Pack Raft with on these late spring rides..

As I went around the bend past Harding heading to Delta this afternoon I was sure you weren't on your line, "breakup is here". When I passed the state camp and your rig wasn't there I was sure you weren't.

Little did I know. Glad you made it out safe JR.

One thing's for sure JR your journal and stories are never boring ! Thanks again for allowing us to tag along and showing off some great looking country along your trap and snare line.
The wolf put up is very interesting I for one hope to get to stretch my first wolf sooner than later and will be back looking at your pictures repeatedly when that time comes.
Have a great bear and fishing season and keep posting pictures.
Allan

Greeting fellas. Hope all is well this summer. It's seeming to be flying by. Been busy this spring and summer with bear baiting and lots of relatives coming up to visit from the lower 48. I'll start out with some pics from the spring baits. Lots of bears but I didn't harvest one myself. Had a few buddies take a couple Black bears and one griz.

Had a blast with those trail cameras and they sure are addicting. Left a few in the field just to see what is going on. Here's a few of the overflow on the creek that is a pain in the winter but sure makes for smooth fast running in the early summer and also keeps my groceries cold up into July.
