Thats a nice haul, many years since I have done it now but my brothers and I used to go get a pickup box full every year. Lots of good times had smeltn. We could clean a few 5 gallon pails worth then the rest got turned into trap bait and split between us.

They allow us 2 gallons a day. I'd love a cooler full of those silver beauties, I want to try canning them like sardines.

We used to have huge runs here along Lake Michigan south of Door County but they have really dropped off to the point where few are caught and far, far fewer go after them. Lake sucker runs are still pretty good.

I still recall when I was in the UP and went smelting for the first time. The head of that first smelt tasted mighty fine. This was in the late 70's and smelt were plentiful.

There are two spring fishing seasons here that are spawning.

Smelt and Lake suckers.

Many fond memories of smelting in Lake Ontario, and the occasional run over to the Niagara River. I don't even know if they have them here in this state.

Jeez Boss, you fell for that old "we alus bite the head offa the first smelt" ploy the locals use on every smelt nubbie from south of the Mackinac Bridge?! Those Yoopers likely also told you it was acceptable to put carrots in a pasty. You have to stay on your toes around those guys.....double if they're Finlanders.
