Got 2 doz. of the lil' grizz traps to use next fall for coon and I'm wondering what type of set-ups do people use? How do you position the trap? Do you anchor the trap or place it at a 45 degree angle? Also, what type of bait do you use and how is it placed in the trap? I have some ideas but I want to gather any other thoughts I can get.

I have seen a lot of guys on here that use marshmellows in them for bait.

I put one large marshmallom on the trigger and two more on top of that one in the trap. I then shove the spring in the ground in the center of the coon trail, straight up and down, and give it a quarter turn. I then trail a little salmon oil to it from each side along the trail. Never caught a cat doing it that way but coons won't pass them. The biggest problem aside from cost is the mice will rob you blind. If you don't make a catch on coons before the mice find the trap, you just as well move them. They'll be setting there empty everyday after that, at least most of the time. That's been my experiance anyway.

adc hit the nail on the head. if the mice find your set, move it because they'll clean you out before the coon have a chance. marshmellows (large) one impaled on the trigger and a topper above that with little fish oil on the ground around it. i also use four or five little marshmellows on the ground around the set. coon catching machine that's for sure.

the grump.

ADC and grump have it right. I like jack mackrel in mine. Every once in a while a coon will hook the marshmellow just right and get it out w/ out setting off the trap. Theres probably enough bones in the mackrel they think the trigger is a bone and they have to work it a little harder to get it all out. I like to put one big mellow on top for eye appeal. If the trap goes off you will have a coon.

It seems to me I caught less possums w/ these than coilsprings and dirt holes. Im assuming some of them just arent smart enough to get the bait! You can catch a kitty on the mackrel though.

Circus Peanuts, the orange candy ones work and Berkly Power Bait works good too. Get the tube jig type of grub.

This is bugging the crap out of me. I've searched under Lil Grizz, Lil Griz, Griz, Grizz, dog proof, tried to look through all of Andy S's posts (It only shows like 400 out of the 5,000+) and can not find it!!!

There were like 5 videos from Andy and at least a dozen pictures from other folks all with Lil Grizz setups.

I saw it yesterday when I was reading through all kinds of threads in the archives, but I've gone back through all the posts in the archives too but didn't find it there either!

This is driving me nuts!

If you put bait in a lil' griz and put it on a coon trail you're going to catch coons. People get to caught up in what to use. A coon is a coon is a coon.

That should get you started. Maybe I should not have let the cat out of the bag.

I use sardines for years, till I ran out of money. I now use marshmellows and they are cheaper than sardines.

y'know, I love watchin' Andy's videos, but I hate looking up his nose until it starts.
Come to think about it, I guess it could be worse.
Forget that I complained.

I normally set with marshmallows or chunks of shad...set on good sign. However, anyone who has used marshmallows knows that the mice love them. As previously said on this thread, if the mice find it first, you might as well move it.

I spoke with a guy last week who said that he paints his grizz white for a visual attractor. He said that he baits with dry cat food in and around the trap and then squirts a line of salmon oil mixed with a good coon lure (3:1 mix ratio)in the trap as well as a trail 2 or 3 feet long from the trap along the trail. I plan in giving this a try next season to see how well it works.

I just go fishin and cut up what ever I catch and pack into the bottom of the grizz and just set near sign. The best location I had this year was near and old house and caught 7 coons at that spot.
