Just caught number 7 this morning. 3 in the fall 17-18lbs 2 under the ice 20lbs and 2 this spring 18 and 23 lbs
Every spring for the past several years I would catch 4 kits and one mature male from this pond and the female keeps giving me the slip (she is a whole other story)
But 7 yearlings this year so far, can they really have that many young?
I did discover another lodge over on the other side of the road from this pond in the nieghbors pond but find it hard to believe they are coming over to this pond
Any thoughts?

I caught one which had 8 fully furred little ones about ready to pop out any day. I don't know if they have a pecking order for teats or if they feed in shifts, but I am sure they find a way to raise that many. Was she a really large one, the female at this location is got to be pushing 5 years old, I have seen some things that make me believe she is very large

Yea. It's the hiegths of some of the cut offs that are some of the indicators as to how big I believe she is.

Had one that raised 10 a year. She weighed 86 pounds when caught in the fall. Missed her the first year, caught 10 young of the year and 10 from the year before and the male. She found another mate and raised 10 the next spring . Tom

Just picked up kit #6 from another site. Half of them have been black. Too bad it's a site where fur trapping would be too much work in the winter as they are pretty

This is the second ADC site I have had black beavers at. Would like some on easier sites in the winter but both of these are not good winter sites

On my northwestern line, totally black beaver, run about 6%.The black influence is seen in many of the others. I have taken several over 70 pounds, but the 86 pounder has been the largest. The harder to get to---the more large beaver to get. I believe if the 86 pounder had been taken in the spring--it would have been close to 100 pounds. Tom

When ever I caught more than 4 kits I have always eventually caught another female or found that one was shot or trapped. I was always thinking a female could have more than four kits because of what others have said in the past and pictures here recently have shown.
Several Gov. agencies trying to promote themselves have used beaver autopsy to show how many kits they had in the litter that year. I always laughed at how gullible the listeners were. They used the show as a tool to win over my competition from counties and cities preying on the limited knowledge their listeners had.
I am sure that more than 4 is possible, but it has been my experience that it is extremely uncommon. At least where I live. _________________________ http://www.advancedtrap.com Maybe it is a regional thing that may allow for common catches that show more than 4 kits per litter. It could also be the use of exposed sets in regions that have numerous trappers which increase the number of older educated beaver. Because the trapper never caught the educated beaver it would encourage the belief more than four kits were born to one female. It would be especially true of a trapper that was more confident of his ability than what really had been taking place.
