I'm no Newhouse expert, but I've owned and used my share thru the years, and I wasn't aware that Newhouse made a 44.

Newhouse did make a #44. The pans are stamped with the number 44, have a swiveled base link, and heavier chain. I've seen the NO patent date and patent date OC models. My book shows an ATC model but I can't remember ever seeing one..... Dale

It depends on the condition and model of the trap, how much you want to get rid of it, and how much a buyer wants it. I feel pretty safe saying somewhere between $40 and $300. I know that doesn't help much but I have a tough time pricing my own stuff....

Don't quote me on this but I think the government ordered #4s with a heavey chain and the swiveled base link. Enough were made that the Oneida Community decided to call them 44s to differentiate the two. Many 44s have government stampings but some must have been available to the public also. Depending on the order, some had rings, some didn't.

I am hoping someone with a little more expertise will chime in because I sure don't have anything to back up my thoughts on this. And I would sure like to know if there is a #44 with an "Animal Trap Co." pan..

But having the "TEXAS" stamping is sure to increase your traps value!!!!!!

Dale. You are correct. Here is an illustration from the 1914 "Newhouse Trappers Guide", it shows the #4 Newhouse with the chain off the base. I am not sure exactly when Oneida Community started calling it a #44 but the #44 is not listed in the 1917-18 catalog but it is listed in the 1920 catalog.

I have only seen a couple of photos of the ATC #44 but I have seen them.

What is the story on the chain-link like deal on the #4 trap ring
in the picture? I have only seen one, I don't get around much.

Ol'Smoke, On the chain ring is a figure 8 cold shut link like is on the early #4 1/2's. My thought is that you could drive your stake through it to anchor the trap and it would still spin around the stake. You could also add more chain with it and a drag if desired.

Animal Trap Company of America (ATC), advertised the #44 in their trap catalogs until 1936. The #44 is not in the 1937 catalog. ATC continued to use the Oneida Community name on a lot of their traps for years after they bought out Oneida Community's trap business in March 1925. A Newhouse trap with an Oneida Community, N.Y. pan but no spring stamps, was likely produced by ATC in Lititz, PA. I have seen a couple of photos of #44 traps with ATC, Lititz, PA pans.

seems like the pans that were marked with the states were made between 1917 - 1930.
