What areas of the twin cities would be decent to live in without breaking the bank? Suburbs? Probably looking at around 250K home..

If you want to have decent escape access to getting up to the north central and northwestern vacation areas I would look at the western suburbs of minneapolis. You would do well with that money in saint Louis park, golden valley, new hope, parts of Minnetonka.
I would avoid Brooklyn center, Brooklyn park, Champlan, Hopkins or Robbins dale.
Somewhat depends if you have to be at a certain place daily for commute reasons.

I prefer the east side. Mainly because Washington county votes conservative. White bear, Hugo, Forest lake, all less than 30 minutes from either city. 35e and 35w both have been redone with concrete from the split south. 35e all the way to St Paul.

The twin cities area is all a toilet. It's all quickly becoming Little Somalia.

I have visited the twin cities on work trips. I would not live there or close to the city. The nicer suburbs, possibly.

I live in Belle Plaine which is about 45 miles southwest of the Twin Cities. I worked construction and made the drive all around the cities for 40 yrs. I never wanted to get any closer than I am. If you can try to stay out of the seven county metro area. The taxes are cheaper.

Oh, and the city girl I live with. Actually, thinking about living cheap for a few years and then purchasing a fishing resort/lake home north of the cities to retire on.

Lake and Hennepin has the hottest young chicks you ever hope to see. From there, a short walk (jog) to Lake Calhound where those chicks bounce their stuff all day on the pedestrian paths around the lake.

The real toilets are closer in. If it's Somali-phobia avoid the West Bank of the U of M.

The Metro area is unbelievably huge and diverse. There are pockets or affordable, livable neighborhoods almost everywhere. I have actually considered downsizing to an urban apartment, and a hunting/farming acreage within a 50 mile drive.

Without knowing where you might be commuting daily; I assume you have ties to NE, so try to stay near I94 or 212 if'n you're going to be headed back on a regular basis.

Rogers, Elk River, Otsego and even St Michael, Albertville, Montecelo are decent, reasonable and manageable commutes on the north end. Cologne, Hamburg, Chaska, and a bunch of others work well on the south end.

Give us a better idea of your goals, and we can probably help narrow your search.

Stpaul has sprawled well past the suburbs of forest lake Born!

Chisago it goes back 20 years. I would go a bit farther north than that and stay off 35!

(I grew up and still have family from flake to ely). When you're gone for a bit and return it becomes immediatly obvious!

Go north!

North of the cities within reason of your commute.
Driving into the sun sucks in the morning.
Easy axcess for further north, then too .
East of Hudson on the Wisconsin side also.

I'm just testing the waters at this point. I have applications out for administrative positions at the University of MN and a couple of other places. One in the Anoka area and two others closer to the St. Paul metro area. Probably, a better chance that I will just stay here, but if I get an offer I can't refuse. I'm headed north!

Elk River area ain't bad... if you're into that kind of thing...
Get a place on the outskirts of the cities. When I say outskirt I am talking 45 minute to an hour drive to the cities. Much simpler out there. Things aren't as cramped.
