Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere. Did a search and came up empty (I am probably a lame searcher).

I have a pal who is having bear problems (damage).

He is trying to catch the bear in an M15 snare (using a bucket) and the coons either pick the trigger clean, or trip the trigger and get snared around their mid-section.

He thought about putting a large, heavy and flat rock on top of the bucket, but is understandably afraid that in the process of removing the rock, the bear will disturb the snare.

We've been brainstorming. We thought maybe drilling some holes in the side of th bucket and running dowels through...something the bear can break but not the coon. But then once again you get into the whole bucket/snare getting disturbed to the point where it may not work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Tarbe

Sounds like coons and collarums. Only thing I could suggest would thinning out the coons first.

You can bury the bucket to ground level to make it solid, leaving room for the spring, then place the rock on top, a couple pieces of tape should hold the cable in place.
too, you could drill holes in the bucket for rebar stakes to hold it solid, and do the same with the rock.

all of this is presuming you are setting it where the bear wants to be,(causing damage) not just anywhere in the woods hoping the bear will find it.
