I'm looking to start ADC work, and am picking up a spray proof skunk trap for the same. My question is how do you check to see what's in it, since it's opaque? Hate to catch a pet by mistake, but also don't want to get sprayed. Thanks.

Can always drill holes in the trap so you can see whats inside. Personally I dont use those traps for skunks as I'd rather have more versatile traps.

If you are worried about being sprayed, I would pick up Bob Noonan's book on the subject, Odorless Skunk Removal

the door of a Plasti=catch has holes in it to see what is caught. On the larger 12x12 size I install a plexi-glass window on the top.

Easily turn the trap on end. And open the door just enough to peak inside. Not trying to be funny. Do it all the time. Stop and see me at the NTA next week. Building #2, tables 440 - 444

IMO "spray proof" traps are overrated, simple piece of rubber covering the trap and something draped over the ends during transport is plenty. You could attach two flaps to the trap. Just have one flap over the door so when the trap door falls the flap falls as well. Then flip the rear flap over when handling the trap, it's up to you. If you startle the skunk regardless of what trap you use, it's going to be a bad day no matter how you look at it. These skunks were transported in the back of my jeep. Handle skunks with care, approach them slowly and keep them covered to reduce the risk of an exposure.

Jim Bethell is correct. when you tip up a solid metal or plastic cage to peek in the skunk will be off balance and will not spray. I've had skunks that were reluctant to leave the cage and I have to shake the cage hard to snap them out; again they are all off balance and I have never had one spray me doing it that way; just glad to get out of there.

X2

I'm sorry but if you don't know how to check a trap with a skunk in it you should rethink the whole getting in to a Nuisance Wildlife Control business

Don't rethink anything if you want to dabble in wildlife control go for it. You have to start somewhere. A lot of folks become google experts, don't fall into that category. Go out there and get the proper licensing and learn as you go. Plenty of valuable information out there to get you started. Reading forums and becoming a google expert can only bring you so far. Hands on experience and learn from your mistakes. Experience is the best teacher.

The ability to get a caged skunk and using no covering whatsoever without getting sprayed with your clients watching is a good way to get clients to talk about you(and make people think highly of your skills and comfortable paying the invoice)

Cover or no cover, solving their issue without an incident and doing it within a day or two will have the same effect. Around here they could care less whether someone trapped an removed a skunk in an uncovered cage. They just want the animal gone.

x2...then cover and move wherever you want....like into "the chamber."

The trick is to speak softly and move slowly, so they don't feel threatened and your home free.

It's the baby ones that spray with little provocation.

If they start patting their front feet on the ground, or lift their rear off the ground, BACK OFF, and wait until they calm down.
