I agree !00% with this. Wolverine and wolves are typically fairly easy to deal with compared to a otter. They are a chainsaw with legs!

I've got 2dz Vic #2s I have been wanting to get converted to dogless for some time, I really like the new Montgumery pans over the Bridger pan design. Has anyone done up any like that?

Dale Torma used to be on here but isn't anymore. He had some great pics of all the different dogless longspring designs he had tried. You may be able to find that thread.

Another spot longsprings excel is atop a beaver dam. Both a dry set for fox and 'cats walking the dam and for the dam crossover for beaver/otter/mink. IMO the springs do a lot to steady spreading out further that a coilspring. Particularly when the dam is more sticks than mud.

where do you get the part that holds the j-hook to the trap spring?

Not sure you can buy them new but you might contact map or fnt see were that gets ya. Post ad o the trap shed people take them off some times. But most people who baseplate longs just cut that piece off. I know I have few somewhere.

Hey look here! I found another dozen old #2 longs for $3 each and am modifying them to hold coyotes, coon, badger, cats, fox, or anything we else we trap here. Center mounted with quick link, a length of twist link chain, two midchain swivels, double stake swivel, booster springs, and filed the dog and pans to a short, crisp throw. Got a few to go through yet but here is first three. Still my favorite all around trap.
Plus I can set longs over my knee easier than stout coils.
Fun to tinker on, too.

What holds the helpers in place?

Nothing, or you can wrap some wire around them at bend in springs.
That works too. I haven't had them pop out though. Just need to be dipped yet.

For the larger springs in order for the helpers to stay put and not fall out when you get a catch, wire like jabne said works, I've done it like that as well on a few vic #2s also. Awesome trap for what it is, they need a lil tinkering like you mentioned.

I am really loving these long springs, I will post some pics of the 1 1/2 longs I am modding with Wild River pans (nothing fancy) and I just picked up some Vic #4s in a trade and will work on getting those ready to supplement my beaver sets this November and next year all my 3's and 4's will get pan mods, either pit or dogless mods. I picked up a Bridger #4 DL and have done the large pan mod with the metal electrical box cover, reworked the chain and swivels and have to do the night latch yet. I want to get me some #2's next year, I could be a big big long spring trap guy I think!

Anyone got pics of bedding a long spring for a coyote set?

I don't have any pictures but this is how I do it- I dig out a bed just big enough for the open jaw area. Then I set the trap, move the springs to the dog side and "hover" the trap over the bed to see where the springs will be. I take the claw of my digging hammer and dig out the two slots for the springs. Anchor the trap, put it in the bed, put my polyfill under the pan, fill in between the jaws with peat moss, cover the springs with dirt and lightly cover the peat moss with dirt.
