NH has the White Mountains and also has Mount Washington....which owns a couple of wind records and severe weather. My son has driven up the Auto Road...it's scary...no guard rails....and very steep...it's on my bucket list.

What most folks in the Rocky Mtn states don't understand (and never will understand until they hike one) is that a 4000 Ft mtn in the NH Whites is like a 10000 ft mtn in the Rockies. Thin air is not really an issue in the Whites like it is with the high peaks out west, but tree line in NH is only about 4200 ft. Winter weather conditions are that severe. Also, the granite is not "rotten rock" like out west so many of the trails have much steeper grades. 1000 ft/mile elevation change is fairly common in the Whites.

I've hiked all 48 of the 4000 ft peaks in the NH White Mtns at least 3 times including Mt Washington which I've hiked 6 or 8 times. There is no better way to get yourself in shape for a mountain hunt IMO.
