Well if we have any less of a winter than we did last year it won't get below freezing. We have had a couple of very mild winters in a row and you can sure tell by the mosquito population lol.

I've heard people saying it's gonna be another bad one around these parts.

Speaking of local professionals , there has been many a contractor in these parts who have threatened to install a window in the office of the long time local meteorologist..........lol

I have heard people say when there is a lot of berries (wild) it is going to be a hard winter. The berry's and wild fruit was a bumper crop and still berries on the trees/bushes.

Our chokecherry bush / tree has a bumper crop of berries on it as does some down the road from here. The farmers almanac mentioned colder than normal and little if any snow, I was starting to look for a new snowmobile I think I'll wait ha ha

Ours are always hard to predict. There's been a lot of bears in a couple cities here which they say is due to acorns falling early.
Last year my mulberry tree had dropped a lot of leaves at this time and it was mild. This year has been the opposite

Hopefully it doesn't rain all winter like last year. Downpours on Christmas in MN is unacceptable.

I hope it's a short winter but it is going to be a long and hard one. Gonna be good for snow removal.

One thing I've heard for years around here is you can judge your coming winter by the size of the rat houses on the sloughs. Large rat house = harsh winter. Small rat house + mild winter. I haven't seen any this year. Don't know if that means we'll be wearing shorts all winter or there aren't any rats. crazy

No rat huts here either, but they usually don't start building until mid-late October in my area.

My guess is not a lot of snow but its going to be very cold. Last year we got an extreme amount of snow for ND in the end of November and December which shut down a lot of trap lines and made snaring difficult unless you were using a snowmobile to run your line. Every time they cleaned out the country roads a strong wind would come through and plug everything right back up like they weren't even there and driving through it was impossible.

Hoping our winter is anything but a repeat of last.

Maybe so. But spring rains would be nice too and I'd still be able to get around the country roads.

There is a really huge crop of black walnuts here too. The branches are hanging low and some branches broke off in the last, fairly weak storm.

I hope we have another mild Winter, but suspect it will be a cold one since Summer was so cool.

I try to keep a 30 day supply, or greater, of feed, for all of my birds, dogs and us. I try to keep enough hay to last until the end of May for the goats and cattle. I remember the Winter of 1978 and figure, something like that will happen again sooner or later.

Black panther sightings are way down around here, so I conclude that anyone who believes that plant and animal behavior is a reliable predictor of future winter weather isn't looking in the right places for finding black panthers.
