That airplane is a side by side in the front?
Pretty cool journal. I think almost all of us wanted to fly. You added the trapping part to it. How does it get any better than that?

There is a pilot/guide/trapper/A&P in Anchorage that carries a 1st generation Tundra on the left gearleg of his super cub. Makes for quite the load. The Tundra has brackets welded on that quick-tach to the custom gearleg.

GUK.....it's the sound they make when they hit the end of the cable

Here's a couple pictures from out and about filling the freezer this fall. I've got some new ideas and am looking forward to the trapping season!

And got home and found the ATA calander in the mail. Opened up to October and found this:

I don't remember submiting any pictures for the calander, but cool!

It's actually a -14 (very similar to a -12) with a seaplane door.

Started off this year trapping some mid-october beaver for bait. Pretty late to be boating in my area. Picked up 15 in about a week of after work runs.

I was able to make the first trip out to the cabin on November 16th, pretty early, so I just brought a load of bait and other supplies into the cabin and set a few marten sets around the cabin lake. I had 12'' of good ice on my lake, but the river was still open and bigger lakes had lots of water on them, so I didn't venture out anywhere.

I was surprised to find fresh bear tracks this late on the lake. He walked up next to my cabin, sniffed around, batted some empty metal drums, and left some paw prints on the side of my cabin. I assume the bear fence did it's job, because the only damage he caused was to my spare door hanging on the back wall. I'm sure glad that's the door he took exception to.

Second trip in just after thanksgiving I started making sets. Got in about half my marten gear and a hand full of wolverine and wolf sets.

My trapping partner enjoying the stove after a day out in the cold

There was a full moon on the 2nd of December, so I decided to take the Elan up on the ridge behind the cabin around 3am. I knew there were caribou up there, and thought I might get lucky and find wolves taking advantage of the moon. I also had half a mind to try some lynx calling down in the flats in rabbit country. About half way up the ridge I ran into fresh bear tracks again! This guy seriously needs to go to bed... I quickly forgot about using any sort of distress call that night. I got up on top of the ridge, made a few wolverine sets in the rocks and started howling. Almost immediately I had a response, but the only wolves around seemed to be several miles away off in the river bottom, and I wasn't able to draw them up the hill. I suspect they were enjoying their own caribou already. The caribou are plentiful around my country right now.

In all not a bad start, 7 marten and a wayward mink who found his way into a marten set on the lakeshore.

Are you going to change your Moniker to 185pilot now that you've upgraded to get up there faster? That's Tom's old place right? leo

Yea, it is Tom's old place. I still have the -14, and I'll probably use it more than the 185, but early season hauling lots of bait, gear, and gas it's nice to use the bigger one.

Nice upgrade on the bird !! Great for hauling gear but that low and slow stuff is where that 14 will shine

Well, I came back in from the line yesterday. What a mess... This warm spell we are having has made a mess of everything, even up in the Brooks Range. The river is opening back up, with lots of overflow in other places, and the lakes are covered in overflow under 2' of snow. I can't even get to some of my sets until things firm back up. Luckily I escaped the overflow without getting stuck in the plane. I had planned to spend 4 days setting gear this week, but I ended up spending the time on some cabin projects and breaking some trail with the elan and on foot.

The warm weather does seem to have the marten running around though, I picked up 18, a record week for me. I also picked up right were I left off last season with the wolverine. He came by one of my marten sets, tore down the pole and ate a marten. I often see wolverine sign here, so I'd set a 330 in a plywood cubby. He proceeded to pull the 330 out of the cubby and help himself to the duck I'd left there. I remade the set and left a leg-hold under the marten pole. I'm trying a variety of 330 trigger arraignments and sets this year in hopes of finding something that my wolverine are not too wary of.

While I was breaking trail up through a pass I was loosely following an old trail when I found an old marten set from an old-timer before me. I don't typically use leg holds for marten, but I figured I had to make the set.

How much snow do you wolfers let build up on top of your leg holds before you consider them out of commission? I set out several pee posts last week, but there's been over 12'' of snow since then. It's all fluffy powder snow and they are all #9's.

Hopefully next week it'll cool off, but the forecast isn't looking promising...
