In the mountains my 5.9 diesel never got warmer than 155
Tonight, 1.5 hour drive home, 43 degrees, temp was 145-155, lower driving through towns, it should be near 190 after warming up right?

Always been an indication to me when temps bounce out of the norm range that either the stat is bad or the heater core is plugged up.

Pretty easy fix and cheap for either, one other thing could be the water pump impellers are worn or the pump is wearing out.
You don't have any water leaks showing up do you ?

No leaks, heater works ok as far as I can tell, just seems like even if cool out it should be higher on temp gauge

I would expect temps to be HIGHER if the water pump or impeller was bad

Yeah. The thermostat MIGHT be stuck OPEN. That could make it run cooler. The whole works should be pretty cheap to replace

The thermostat on my isx went out and would not warm above 145 when they go there supposed to stick open so you don't over heat your motor. Got a new one and it runs between 175/180 fan kicks on about 210

Might as well drain all coolant and replace hoses now. The thermostat will be the the cheapest part.

Ya was thinking flushing it, I'll check hoses, if soft I'll replace, I bet they charge a lot for hose now, haven't bought a hose for about 20-30 years

I'm not a mechanic but here's my experience:
1) anything clogged up, temp goes higher
2) temp goes lower the coolant is free flowing, the thermostat is stuck open.

You could block off part of the radiator with cardboard. Is that cheap enough for you? lol

Given that it's a 5.9 I assume it's a Dodge with a Cummins. If so, make sure you get it refilled properly because part of the cooling loop cools the turbo. I had my water pump bearing go out while traveling away from home. Took it to a dealership for replacement and they paid special attention to venting and filling the system due to the turbo.

No v6, That was for both and at auto zone or o'Reilly's.
I just looked on rockauto.com and put in 02 5.9 turbocharged (not sure of year)3 and they avg $13.00 each for upper and lower hoses

Like White said stuck open it sounds like it should be flowing through the radiator like crazy if it is, just check it when it's cool!

Yup, I bet it's open, it got about 160 today, hose price at rock Auto sounds good, if I need one, not sure if their stuff is good quality.
Lol, yup it's an '02! Lol
Good to know about refilling, I thought my turbo was cooled with motor oil

I have had a few thermostats stick open , if you want heat put cardboard over the grill , if it warms up better then, yup thermostat stuck open.

your lucky you realized it now I usually know for sure when I drive 50 minutes to work on a cold single digit morning and freeze all the way there , put cardboard over the grill for the drive home and have a bit more heat , then get it over to get a new thermostat.
