I am reading 50 years a hunter and trapper by Woodcock. He used a lot of them(late 1800's early 1900's). Are they even legal anywhere? Just wondering of success, stories, or other info. He did deadfalls for bear which would seem to be a large task.

Great read! Love that book. I enjoy reading it by the lantern while in camp.

Read that book as well. Good read.

I built a dead fall that should have handled a coon. Never used it for coon. Not leagle here.

I kept one set for the better part of one winter, I can't remember how many possums quit eyeballing my chickens because of that deadfall. If set properly they work great and can be VERY sensitive. One time I used a 100 plus pound log in a set for beaver, all I caught were muskrats!

My dad loves to tell the story when he was a kid, him and his brother together could just barely get the wagon tongue up above their heads when Mom yells out lunch is ready. He was more hungry and ran in. Long story long, nobody ate lunch and instead went to get stitches for his brother.

Where did you find that? I've never been able to figure out if they are or not, and the wardens I have asked haven't had an answer for me, either.

Rick Otts- a deadfall was an object, rock, tree limb and so forth used to come down on an animal and kill it.

I never made one, but an old man showed me how to notch sticks, to make a figure 4 trigger. This was what he told me he used as a boy, on deadfalls he made for rabbits.

Fur-Fish-Game sells a book printed back in the very late 1800's to very early 1900's titled, DEADFALLS AND SNARES. If you are interested in them.

They can be very dangerous, so I would assume they are illegal in most States.

Agree with tweed, happy people is a must see... Just when you think you have "arrived" as a trapper , check this dude out... Watch how he uses his hatchet, check out how beautifully simple his dead falls are. It is a documentory by Werner Herzog. Really... watch it.

It used to be in the synopses that free booklet that they give out with your licenses not sure when they took it out but it is still in the legal code book that the game wardens use and are supposed to know you can get a copy if your interested it is not free but worth it if your interested I got one a few years ago at the recommendation of another member here on Trapperman
