Today is my sons 17th Birthday, he has been wanting to catch a steelhead really bad. He's on forums, watch videos and buying gear

Today after I pick him up I plan to take him fishing for steelhead but I have no clue how to help him increase his chance to catch one

Open to suggestions

I'm not sure what type of stream you are fishing, but I have always had great luck with large Panther Martin Spinners. Good Luck!

I've never had a chance to fish for steel head but I have got a couple big lake run rainbows that come in the creeks to spawn, I use num 4 panther Martin yellow body with red dots and silver blade, if a lower to use bait tip the spinner with wax worms,

They're just a big trout, anything you use to catch "little" trout
will work, have caught them on everything from micro flies and single eggs
to Velveeta cheese, spinners to plugs to white curly tailed jigs.
My personal favorite is a large emerald shiner, alive or salted,
eggs/sacs might out produce the minnows in certain instances,
but the minnows are way less messy,if all else fails,
power bait will work.

I fish them over here on lk michigan, but for me steelhead is winter/spring. Best bait is spawn, the fresher the better, on a small hook under a float. This time of year I get 1 or 2 when I am fishing for browns using the rig above in the harbor and rivers

This ^
or spawn with floaties tied in a sack about the size of a dime, #12 hook, 5' leader from dropper knot that has a weight adjusted to just get a bottom contact bounce (drift) in the current.....Killer combo!

Steelhead like to sit on the edge of where fast water meets slow water and let their food come to them, cast up into the fast water and holding the rod tip high (I use a long rod or a fly rod for drift fishing) so as to not let the line get ahead of the bait/fly and cause un-natural drag, the presentation needs to be as natural as possible for drifting. My favorite fly was a white deer hair muddle minnow that I tied myself with a red yarn tail, this fly has taken very large Steelhead and smallmouth bass in both spring and fall and open water winter fishing. Leech flies in various colors with and without rattles in them work also. Winter Steelhead are feeding for energy, fall Steelhead are spawning so roe/eggs works very good in fall and early winter, springtime most anything works if it fits the particular conditions etc.

I love flyfishing for Steelies, Silver Bullets are just fun as heck and powerful fighters, a 7wt medium-fast action rod with floating line and good leaders with the white muddler minnow and a split shot ahead of it is a killer combo, mend your line upstream to keep the drift natural and let the fly follow the current to the Steelhead waiting for it and have a blast! Good Luck!

I always used corkies and yarn, but the key is you need to be bouncing the bottom whatever lure or bait your drifting.

Worm and weight in a stream works most of the time if you can put it in front of their face

Depends on what body of water youre fishing. Lake you'll want to run 20-35' with spoons or my favorite, a gold cast master. River fishing I'll set up a three-way swivel with a drop weight hold it stationary with a spawn sac on the end of a #6 red eagle claw that's barbless.
