I also use the 17 rem, just not at night. What is your go to load ? I was actually going to try and copy the factory load.

Why not at night? Is tracking involved?

What he said. I run a suppressed AR in .223 but it does a lot of pelt damage & am thinking of going to a .204 Ruger although not sure how much better that will be. I like to run 2 shooters so I'll have one w/ a rifle & 1 w/ a shotgun, I like my Benelli M2 20 ga. w/ #4 buck

Have you tried the 60gr V-Max? I rarely get an exit. Drops them like a hammer. 25gr Varget. 16" barrel.

A lot of my “night hunting” was in another State and usually in a contest. So I guess the answer would be , for Time control. I’ve hit them before where they were dead, but they didn’t realize it for 50 to 100 yards.

I have an old Savage 24 (D?). .22 mag, 20 gauge over/under. There's not a lot of small game I don't think it could take. Heck, I'd even bet a slug in the tube would do a good chunk of big game. Sort of a jack-of-all trades gun, but I'm not sure how available they are. Also, the trigger sucks, and there's nothing you can do about it. eek

Thanks lots of good info. Keep them coming. I'm looming into getting a gun just for predators and small game other than my 22lr. The 17 remington ammo is expensive and harder to find.

I wouldn't go with an odd ball round unless you reload.

no they blow up inside 99 % of the time-explosive kills with minimal sewing.

Presently, I use a .22 magnum and a .243 both of which are very effective in different settings. I’m looking for a very effective rifle for in between that will cover all settings out to 200 yards which is plenty for my locations and style of hunting.

I do not and have no intention of reloading. I don’t have the time or space. So that eliminates the .17 Remington centerfire.

Right now, the best candidate is the .17 Winchester Super Magnum in a Ruger 77/17 rifle. However, I am concerned about it being an “oddball” cartridge so becoming obsolete or expensive to shoot. Also, I am concerned about its performance and clean quick kills.

So, I would like to hear about actual experiences with this cartridge. Can it be relied upon?

My brother recently bought one ammo can be expensive around $15+- a box. Right now cabelas has them for $10. I'm always looking for deals for him.
He showed me a pic of the kit fox he shot, a massive hole behind shoulder.

Fox, .17 Rem hands down.

Coyotes, something that can throw a 50-55 grain pill with authority. I'm partial to the .22-250.

I would not consider any .17 a coyote rifle beyond 75 yards. Flat shooting yes ! Not big enough for anything but a head shot at about 75 or so yards, much past that and you may not penetrate the skull.

Before y’all go busting my chops I gotta tell ya , I went to go buy one. They had one on the shelf that I intended to buy and the guy talked me out of it as soon as he found out that I was going to use it for coyote. He claimed to have sold a bunch of them to coyote hunters and they were all disappointed. They claimed most coyote not shot in the head ran off after the hit and not all were recovered.

Not saying I’ll never own one but not for coyote, they demand a bigger ball !

First of all, never trust a gun counter salesman. I've heard the craziest things at gun counters.

Was he talking about 17hmr...a rimfire round?

Go back and punch that " salesman" in the face!!

I've had 2 17-204's built and without a doute, they kill coyotes with ( authority) that would amaze even the most seasoned coyote killers!!
My 22-250's and .243,s get lonely sitting home.

Hold on fur too 400 yards, seldom even need a stich, drops called in coyotes like a lightning bolt hits em, and can see it all through the scope.
Granted, this is a custom made cartridge and not for everyone but Don't underestimate the effectiveness of a .17 caliber. Alot of problems are made because people chose BULLETS not designed to handle saving fur.
Fox/ bobcats, coyotes ain't varmints.

Overall, a .17 rem is an outstanding round and way underrated. I reload so my bullet selection is way better than the typical prairie dog bullet you will find for factory made fodder.

22 nosler, or 223 is your best bet. the 17 rimfire will kill coyotes if you hit them perfect every time, with the right bullet, and your very good at tracking, and your lucky. If all I have with me is a 17 and have an opportunity to shoot, I'll use it, but its not a coyote rifle. to have the best in a 17 centerfire for coyotes, you need to shoot 30 gr. bullets, so you need a faster than standard twist, that means a custom barrel and reloading. for what you need to do the 22 cf's would be best and a high expansion 55 or 60 gr bullet that won't exit with a solid hit.
