You're gonna get a lot of opinions.

A .223 AR is probably the most popular

This with 55 grain bullets, plenty of gun but I'm rather good at long shots and do well when I have to stretch out for educated customers.
For shorter range, but more than 12 gauge range, Bucks... Has me searching for a .17 Winchester super mag. I like the ballistics and bullet size out to 250, but the rifles I have checked so far I felt the actions were too crude so to speak. When I find a good smooth one ( hopefully soon ) it will be in my arsenal.

22-250 in a 788 Remington. Paid $119 for it new with a scope.... many many moons ago. Scope has been replaced long ago. But the gun is still a tack driver. All taped up with camo...... oh, the stories it could tell!!!!

I got that same gun in 222. Bought it at K-mart 40 years ago for 125. Had a 4 power tasco on it.

What he said. I run a suppressed AR in .223 but it does a lot of pelt damage & am thinking of going to a .204 Ruger although not sure how much better that will be. I like to run 2 shooters so I'll have one w/ a rifle & 1 w/ a shotgun, I like my Benelli M2 20 ga. w/ #4 buck
