I know some trap just for enjoyment and others for money. For me now I trap more for enjoyment but enjoy the money also when it is there. There was a time though that my trapping money dictated what kind of chrismas my family would have. In 1997 ( a good year) I purchased a nice engagement ring for my wonderful wife. Without the fur money that ring and many Christmases would have been bleak. Growing up trapping $1 rats gave me spending money for a major part of the year ( didn't spend much money those days. lol).
How has/does fur trapping money affect your life?

Lol, engagement rings and raising my family (Christmas presents included) get paid for by what I do for a living.
Trapping money gets blown on whatever I want it to. It doesn’t pay bills or even buy my kids their birthday gift. It buys treestands, trailcameras, new tools, or maybe even put a chunk towards buying a new sled.

I started my lure business with a fur check and continued to keep it floating with fur checks until the business itself kept things going. I never had to use any personal money other than the business and fur checks still today. Trapping money established Night Owl Lures for me so obviously it made a big impact on my life.

I don't make any money trapping but my grandfather trapped muskrats years ago and used the money to buy grandma's ring. I have no clue how many or at what price but I'm guessing it was a lot of work and time.

I used my 2012/2013 fur checks to buy my wife's engagement ring. My 2014 fur check to pay the lion's share of a boat. I plan to use last year's and this year's fur check to pay for a family vacation. Obviously some years the checks have been better than others but I always strive to find something "productive" to spend my fur check on so that my wife agrees with me that trapping is VERY, VERY important to the well-being of our family!!

I just won't trap knowing there is minimal return. I stopped trapping in the mid 80's when the bottom fell out and started up again about 8 years ago when things started to look up.

Haven't trapped the last two years since things went down-hill again. I get my outdoor fix with hunting during years like this.

As far as how the money affect my life, in the late 70's early 80's, i bought cars and guns with fur checks. I made more by taking vacation and trapping than i would've working.
Same goes for a couple years ago. I could bring in a couple thousand in 2 weeks, where i couldn't make that working.

Paid for my two sons to go to and finish college. Worth every penny of those fur checks.

Brother and I financed a good part of our undergrad college with fur money. We bought 3 trucks (98, 02, 03 Dodge Dakotas) all with fur money too, and a pretty decent down payment on my 13 Ram as well. In 2010, we financed a trip to WY to hunt pronghorn and covered all license, fees, and my brother taxidermy bill. Best purchase I made was my lifetime sportsman license with the last fur check before I stopped trapping 6 years ago.
I use to enjoy the trapping when I was younger, but if there is no money in it I've go other things I'd rather waste gas money on.

Well in 1970 I used fur money to buy Intel's IPO. Then in 1980 I used the fur check to buy Apple's IPO. In 1986 used it to buy Microsoft's IPO. I just used the profits to keep trapping. Now I'm broke. Any body no of a good investment?

If you don't think about the hours of work a guy puts into it a guy could think he made some money trapping most years! It's like working 2 fulltime jobs for straight pay/minimum wage but I love it so I keep doing it.

Made more money than other kids back in the 60s trapping 'rats and running setlines in the summer. 'Rats at about a buck apiece and catfish 27 cents a pound on the hoof. Rich kids my brother and I were.

Mid-80s teaching salary was about 13,500. Made nearly half of that running 'rat traps after school for 3-4 weeks.

Good times for sure.

When everything has a good value (70) it's ripe for the making, when it's just one or two species in demand it's tougher.

I do trap for money still but I am less affected by what I make these days. I need to get away from the 9 to 5 and it takes my mind off work. I usually put the money toward something- this year my goal is a good range finder. A couple years ago I got two house payments out it. 15 years ago I was making $800.00 a week after work. I am a trapper stuck in the business world...

I hear that! Last year was my boy and my first year trapping. Unless we get better it will take about a decade to recover what I have invested just to get started. I won't mention what I dropped this year, but that first grinner sure did cost me alot! I did pick up some more ground but have not set on them yet. Waiting for deer season to end.

I split the money with my boy and kept a couple bucks to help cover the gas that we used. I got hooked bad and it is something else that I can do with my kids. Lots of memories checking traps with my kids. On weekends they argue about who gets to go with me to check them. Got a nice double on two big boar coons this year with my 4 year old daughter. She was more excited than I was. She even helped me skin them (she pushed the button for the winch).

I guess in summery my job pays for trapping. The money from trapping gets split with my helpers. If I get a case of beer out it all the better. I am doing it for the memories with my kids. You can't put a price on the look on their face when you have catch. I love hearing them tell the stories of running the line and making a catch, almost better than being there with them. They are good story tellers. They do come by it honest.

So there you have it, I am banking what I get from trapping/hunting with my kids. Some day when I can not do it any more I can sit back and think of all the good times.

No money to be made here.
I don't do it all the time. I do it more for management and recreation..
I don't make any money but it enriches the soul for sure..
The more time spent in the great outdoors the better.. smile
