ShaneT,mine is a similar story over 20 years ago on how I discovered this and killed a 5pt.I was in a stand in a thicket in Mckean County PA on public land.It was opening day and has just broke daylight.I heard shuffling steps and here comes a young guy right up to the tree I'm in.He says "are you Gary"I told him no and quickly ended the conversation. It had been no more than a few minutes, the guy looking for Gary had just went over a knoll about 40yds away and I heard shuffling again.I thought it was the guys buddy, but no,it was a 5pt following the guy in his exact steps.

Thanks to the rest of you fellas.

Thanks

LOL!Don't give Alt a chance to take credit,he will.I saw deer like this every year in the 80s at the big hunting camp in Keating Summit. It was the highlight of the bus ride to school and also a turn-around.

That is a fine Cambria County buck. Any estimate on live weight?

I have killed several in the same manner you described. I actually used to look forward to this one guy coming through each year on the first day because on 3-4 occasions, a buck was following in his steps about 30 minutes later. I actually killed 2 6 pointers and also had spike and 8 point come through in other years. To top it off, a buddy was hunting with me one day and the same guy walked past him. Within 15 minutes 2 really good bucks walked right up to him on the same trail.

Wonder if its a coincidence that I had all of this also happen in Cambria County? You are not in the Twin Rocks area by chance are you? The background in the last photo looks familiar.

Congratulations on a great buck!!

Around 185lbs is my best guess.I'm only about 30 minutes from Twin Rocks...I've noticed this behavior in several counties. But the deer around here are known for it.Thanks.

I grew up in the Mundy's Corner/Nanty Glo area but moved south in 2001.

I usually go back every year to hunt with my dad. I got a nice 12 last year just outside of Nanty Glo, not far from the Sheetz at the Mundy's Corner/Nanty Glo exit. Live weight estimate was 250 lbs. I ended up getting 74 lbs. of meat from it. Huge body and massive rack.

Awesome buck....great job!!

When I was a kid, my dad shot a buck that was sneaking around the edge of a high wall. As soon as he shot it, a guy came running out into the gas line waving his arms and yelling. Apparently, the buck had been watching him walk down a tram road and was following him quite closely from up on top of the high wall, but we couldn't see him down on the road because of the wall. I'm willing to bet that guy had to walk up the road and change his underwear. I hunt a lot of public land, and I have seen deer following a hunters trail many times. Bears will do the same thing, especially if you use a cover up scent that has a vanilla smell. (Mountain Magic)

...all I'm saying is at one point there was a prolific breeder with superior genetics.

The cat is somewhat out of the bag anyhow,I had five different people take pictures before I could get out of my parking spot, lol.
