Was fortunate to harvest a nice 6 by 6 bull in Colorado this year.

Looking to have the ivory made into two bracelets for my girls, any suggestions on where to send them?

Cass and Matt her husband are a couple that are chasing the dream and that is the kind of thing she does i believe.she has a website but you'd have to go to chat and the coyote thread to get the address for it.never saw ivories, have a pic out of curiosity.

Elk "ivory" are the pair of teeth in the upper jaw. Not sure of the evolutionary development.

All elk gave them. In young elk they are hollow and have very little color. The teeth mature with the animal and some can end up with nice patterns. Bull teeth are larger than cow teeth. They can get cavities, just like human teeth.

Deer, moose and caribou do not have "ivory" teeth.

Like Nancy said they are teeth in the upper jaw. They're right above where a normal canine tooth would be located. Which leads some to believe that elk had canines at one point.

Don't mean to be a spoil sport but elk ivorys are not teeth. Any more than a elephants tusks are teeth. Or a walrus tusks are teeth. They are ivory. The roots are hollow just like tusks. Some scientists believe they are vestigial tusks from the last ice age. To the OP if you can get your hands on a copy of BUGLE magazine from RMEF there will be a lot of jewellers that work with elk ivory. I've made earings and rings form them. They are very easy to work with. Most any Jeweller should be able to make a silver "squash blossom" cap. And loop for the chain
if you are going to make a charm for bracelets. Very thoughtful of you your daughters should be proud.
