I think that they are now prime. Picked this one up on my short line, this morning.

Mink here seem to prime up early here, as well. With the prices on mink, I am pretty much leaving them alone, but am bound to get a few, anyway

Ya gota love those dark SE mainland marten. At least I'm assuming it's mainland, that's really the only place I consistently see them that colour.

Yes, mainland. They sure are beautiful. Thought for just a moment I got another fisher. Just enough dust of snow, but small enough to know that I was dreaming.

That's a nice one AV! Wish I had them dark like that, just about all pales...

Had a bear hit 3 of my sets. 2 of the sets have been duds so no big deal but the 3rd was my most productive so far.... If it's the same one (I think it is), it swam about a half mile to get to/from the duds and the most productive. Gonna bring along can of bear spray wrapped in bait for the next check. Anyone have any luck with other deterrents?

I have had a few run-ins over the years. Had a Brownie running a short marten line for me, eating the bait, smashing flower pots, and consuming anything that might have been in a trap. I pulled out. Another time, an orphaned cub took up residence in one of my wolverine cubbies. He also managed to get hung up in a V-14,....TWICE! And I was able to release it both times. I do not recommend that sort of thing.
As for deterrents, I have heard ammonia works, if they bite into a container of it, but have never tried it, personally.

Fur on that marten looking good. Had a bear hang around my camp so I hung up a plastic water bottle with some ammonia in it and some bacon grease on the outside. He bit into it and never seen him since.

Yeah only lost one trap out of the 3, checked some but didn't find it in the brush. Relatively confident there wasn't a marten in it. Will give the ammonia a go, thanks.

Last year, about this time:

About an hour before this picture, that skiff was in a toasty, dry garage! The snow was accumulated on the drive to the ramp!

I like that dark marten! I set a marten line out at my camp and next morning when I went to set more I had already picked up a nice dark. Sort of a dark red to it. Also smacked one in a 330 Sav.
