Good luck in your choice.

X2 on this breed for a outdoor dog, in the house not so much. They just have a LOT of hair. We had one back when I was raising goats. It was a fantastic dog, very quiet most of the time, gentle with the goats and very friendly. They are pretty pricey here in NY, but we found that in Ohio there are more goat farmers which means more Great Pyrenees dogs. We drove 8 hours each way but saved about 600 dollars over buying locally. They were easy to find in Ohio for about $50 at that time.

I can't thank everyone enough for all the input. I enjoy getting personal, first hand experiences on things before moving forward. I do understand it's my decision (so was my wife- so far, so good) and hopefully my insurance stays the same and I'll still probably get one - even if he's an outside dog. ;o) I spend 12+ hours away from home daily and an inside dog is hard in that capacity. Again, thanks to all! Merry Christmas!

Jeff

Labs are social creatures, they won't be happy outside when the family is in.

Go with a Cheasapeake.

Yep, my labs aren't truly happy unless some part of their bodies are touching some part of a family member (their pack); lying on someone's feet, leaning against a leg, working their heads under a hand..

Eh...wot?

After a lifetime of American labs, we got an English pup from a good line. He is 3 yo and we wondered who was training him. Turns out English labs are self trainers, in that they will do things or not do things because of clues they pick up from you. We did train him basic obedience which he learned almost instantly. He is a natural hunter and retriever. He can bounce around the bushes or sit quietly taking everything in. He is protective of family and home. He does have an hour in the evening we call "crazy time." when he runs around in circles with a bone or toy and wants us to play too. If you decide on a lab, research English, and make sure the bloodline has good hips, eyes, etc. Good luck.

I worked at a vet for over 6 yes ABSOLUTE LAST DOG I WOULD OWN IS A GOLDEN. Meanest dogs that we took care of and also the one we had to do the most rabbies observation on (because they had bit someone). I have been around some that are outstanding but they were the exception. I trust pits WAY more than a golden!
With that said I currently have a 13 yr old healer and cannot tell you bow much i wish he was just now turning 1. Pretty awesome breed but very high energy. Better keep them busy if you get on lol

Golden retrievers are awesome. Have grown up with them all my life very good tempered awesome family dog, usually awesome bird hunters.. especially waterfowl. My 17 y/o golden, Brandy has 3 legs and still goes trap checking with me! haha. My other golden Henry who passed away 2 years ago, was my best friend and backpacking partner. Couple times he would sneak up and snatch trout out of the lakes and eat them. Carried his backpack with his food and our fish and loved it. He had all my marten sets memorized and would find them year after year before I did, lol. None of my goldens have ever had an aggressive moment in their life. Have also been around lots of labs and huskies which are both also awesome dogs.

Why even get a dog if your going to keep him outside 99% of the time?

Exactly...why bother....unless they are guarding sheep..Great Perinese (sp)

Your great pyrenees will get big. Our half anatolian shepherd, half great pyrenees is 6' 2" on his back legs and weighs 240.
