Our traditional New Years Day meal has always been black eyed peas and cabbage for the same reason, supposed to be good luck. As far as I can remember I have never missed a meal of black eyed peas and cabbage on New Years. I'm still kicking so I am sticking with it.
I am not sure I have ever had sauerkraut. If I have I don't remember it. I would like to try it but may have to travel to find any that is good.

It's so easy to make yourself there's no good reason why you can't have it. However....it can be an acquired taste...but once acquired...you'll be in love.

Hog jowl, black-eyed peas, cabbage and cornbread....
Each one supposed to mean something unique for the coming year That's our meal. We always put fatback in the cabbage and eat ham. Mamaw won't go for hog jowl.

Shane if you ever had a Reuben sammich you've had sauerkraut. I don't think I have had a Reuben. Don't they sell them at Arby's? May try one when I go back to work Tuesday.

Same here boss, old tradition in my family for at least 3 generations. Add home made kolbossi.

Same as you Boss Man. Sauerkraut and pork. Been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. I just turned 60 and can't remember NOT having it on New Year's Day.

This is our traditional new years meal. Something to do with good luck for the upcoming year.
What are y'all having? Coming from a long line of Pennsylvania Dutchman, my family and I always have pork (because pigs root forward and we all want to keep moving forward through the new year) and sauerkraut (because the shreds of cabbage represent money we hope to earn and the swelling of the sauerkraut represents bounty we hope to reap). Plus it's good eats.
Eh...wot?

Collards with smoked neckbones, turnip greens with jowl bacon and turnip roots, black eyed peas with jowl bacon and the Christmas hambone and rice, baked sweet taters, broiled country style ribs, the last of the Christmas ham and turkey, real crackling cornbread. Good God man! I am jealous.

It will be black eyed peas and smoked ham here. I may just go tomorrow and get a small prime rib and shrimp. One way or another, the grill will be smoking. It will be -8 here tonight, so grilling weather is here. Happy New Year to all, and be safe!!!

I’m with Lugnut. Being PA Dutch we always had some kinda of pork roast and sauerkraut. This year changed it up and made some Bockwurst, Bratwurst, Kilebasa and old fashioned German wieners in sauerkraut with a side of Pierogies in onions and butter. Hopefully it brings us good luck and good health.

black eyed peas come from when sherman marched through and destroyed all the farmland, he left the peas since they were meant for animal consumption and not fit for people to eat. So the confederate soldiers ate the peas during the winter to survive. So they mean good luck. Some sort of greens to represent money since its green and flat like paper money, cornbread to represent gold or wealth. Pork to represent moving forward in the next year (as the hog roots forward).
I hope a bunch of yankees choke while they are eating peas tomorrow for luck, lol.

Warrior you got a spare plate? I am having Black Eyed peas, smoked backbone, stuffed jalapeno with bacon, and jalapeno cornbread. Then I am going to watch the SEC wooop butt. I'll set a plate. Always cook up a big mess of food for New Years.

Trying to get a good Reuben at Arby's is about like trying to get a good cheeseburger at Mickey D's. Real homemade sauerkraut is hard to beat and goes well with about anything. No such thing as a good hot dog without kraut.

That is what I figured. There is a locally owned sandwich shop where I work that I may try. They have killer sandwiches with good ingredients. Will try there first. I hope they have it. I am looking forward to it.

thats an ohio new years day meal. do y`all bake it in the oven together?? and have mash taters with?? oh and yeast rolls!! lol! happy new years boss man! Yes, Rhonda puts the pork in a roaster, covers it with sauerkraut and bakes it. She also adds a bit of brown sugar to the sauerkraut to cut the sharpness. I like the sauerkraut on mashed potatoes.

Had pork & kraut (with mashed potatoes & gravy) for dinner last night. Leftover kraut goes in reuben sandwiches today (with home made russian dressing - plenty of horseradish & hot sauce).

I never have had Russian dressing either. Sigh... I didn't have time to go to the sandwich shop today to see if they make a Reuben. Hopefully tomorrow.

We love ribs & kraut with yellow gold mashed potatoes. We make our own sauerkraut with Stone Head cabbage. It's much better than the kraut you buy in stores.

this right here is what we've always had. these days it comes in the form of sausage balls and sauerkraut for the wife. I usually have blackeyes with a country ham hock, and some other greens with another ham hock. and cornbread for me, thats just a starter - and I add bacon, and pork loin, more country ham, usually mixed greens, fried cabbage, and enough blackeye peas to keep me tootin for a week.
