It’s been really cold here this week. -46 at night. We have two dogs and they stay outside. They don’t come in the house ever so they’re use to being outside no matter what the weather is. I wonder how people think foxes, coyotes, and other animals stay alive during the winter. Look at squirrels for crying out loud. Toasty warm.
Cold as ice!

Andrew I know it would end badly. For the people trespassing on my property and stealing my dog. Not doing that here. Last dog I had was a mountain cur. Short hair like a hound. Got straw in his dog box in the winter. Never came in the house. Never had a hound that came in either. Even those short haired dogs can take cold weather if they are not constantly being brought in the house.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

I personally don't agree with leaving dogs outside but I understand it is necessary with some working dogs.
It is not a "cold" issue with me assuming they are well-cared for and have some sort of shelter where they can get out of the wind and weather. We keep cats, chickens and rabbits outside. All are well-fed and watered (not easy keeping their water liquid with these temps) and have shelters stuffed with wood shavings and straw where they can get out of the weather and try to keep warm.
But dogs are pack animals and we treat ours as part of the family. They live in the house with us 24/7. It's impossible to create a pack bond when the dog is isolated away from the family. Too much time in the kennel or chained out makes any dog neurotic, same thing would happen to an isolated human.
I really hate to see a single dog chained out 24/7...what is the point of having one?
But, it's up to a dog owner how he treats his dog, the do-gooders should bugger off and mind their own business.
Eh...wot?

The local news has ran a story the last couple of nights that the local dog shelter is picking up dogs that are left outside. If they see a dog outside they come back in 20 min if it is still out they take it to the shelter. I remember in previous years they would bring a bail of straw to the dogs left out, but taking them seems over the top to me. I have always had outside dogs. They have a doghouse with hay to sleep in, but outside. Not sure if someone came into my yard to take my dog it would end well. What do you all think? I think I wish I had a taser. I believe that would be trespassing and theft if not mistaken.

I have had dogs outside my whole life.Nice warm insulated dog houses with a flap over the entrance with a walk way on the inside of the dog house and another inside entrance to the sleeping box with straw.

I think people ought to mind their own business. An outside dog is a tough animal. When I used to have coon dogs and it got cold we always piled straw bales over their doghouse. I remember several mornings when it was -20 or more the dogs would be laying on top the straw bales.... not in their hay stuffed house. If a dog is well feed, dry, off the wind and has hay inside his box he is happy. I had a coon dog get lost out hunting once. I could not find it for several days. It got cold. After a couple days a sheriff deputy came driving in my yard. The Sheriff Dept had picked up my dog and put it in a small kennel outside. Then they forgot about the dog. For three days. The deputy told me the dog froze to death. No food, water,shelter... just a plywood wind break. It was a bad deal. So if they ever come to me about my dog being outside (dry, fat, happy and sheltered) I'll remind them big time about the time my dog was in "jail" and how they took care of it!!

My dogs are inside, but I still dare them to try to grab one. kate the great dane would hit them low, while doc the ridgeback , would land on top of thier head. He is getting very protective of his family!
