Better picture for front to back length. Snowing worse now. Got a bigger tape measure with bigger numbers. I was wrong on the length. It's bigger !

Can't tell. With the blowing and drifting in front of the house, the light powder snow is covering everything up. Just went out to shovel the walkway, when I saw it as I hobbled out the front door.

That can't be a Black Bear. Never seen a track that big before.

Might want to hobble back in the front door and lock it.

Put a bag of dog food on the porch. You'll get a better set of tracks that way.

Up here bears get out and wander in winter, not all but a few each year it seems. The years of less snow the tracks are generally smaller bears, years with heavy snow bigger bears. Temps seem to have nothing to do with it. I have never cut a track and followed it to where it returned to the original den. Some of the tracks were less than fresh.
Maybe young ones still come out in deep snow years but know enough to stay put? I have back tracked to abandoned dens in winter and they seemed very cozy, no clue why the bear left or even why they wake up.
My only thought is maybe the big bears in the heavy snow years are so well insulated with fat and good denning they warm too much
And wake? Pure speculation.
I do know that of all the winter bear tracks I have discovered and followed, most in deep bush and some around buildings, I have never seen evidence of the bears big or small trying to eat. Late fall bears excluded I have pictures of bears waking only weeks after going down the first time and eating from my feeders.
I have seen a few times where winter bears wandering ended by going under people's buildings. Might wanna check around your place.

Sound advice. Next time you bend over with the tape measure you might feel hot breath on your backside.

Heaviest body weight, heavy paw fur, extra melting on the edges, big soft paws make for a big track, not to belittle yours, it appears to be a dandy.

Front foot. Measure straight across the pad just behind the toes at the widest point. Looks like it's going to be about six inches across. Nice bear.

Actually Can....I'd set on sign if I were you. Set that trap right under the track. Gonna leave a bit of a hole in the deck to deal with in the spring but the upside is you can check the location thru the window wearing slippers and sipping morning coffee.

Yes, I can get around with a Rifle. I am probably the safest Hunter around here. Dad taught me an easy way to carry the rifle, that he was taught, while in Korea. Works well for me. Got my 30-30 Winchester. Not the biggest caliber, but I can handle the recoil without it throwing me off balance.

I would listen to White 17's advice if it was me. That bear is not there to wish you a Happy New Year. He's a big 'un too. Just wondering...do you live in the country or are there a lot of other houses around you?

Seriously I dont think the bear is anywhere near other than under a building or the like. Curled up behind the woodpile maybe.
Check around in the morning, if you find him he'll be snoozing, call fish and game to come move it.

I have had trail cam pics in February. And I snagged a little one in a trap a couple of weeks ago.

Put some fresh donuts out there with the dogfood. Or a pickAnic basket.

Put out some hot chocolate, he's probably needs it !

Many people been bear baiting? A lot have started around here.

Bears are on the grubs and bugs now here.Season is closed.August they'll be on the chokecherrys,raspberrys and then the blueberries until October.You wouldn't have much luck with bait here if the blueberries come in thick.
