anybody have a recommendation of a good brand of insert? I want one with a blower.

Space is pretty open about 36 inches wide. Tired of seeing all the heat go up the chimney from my wood burning fireplace!

I have an Osburn insert and love it. I got one larger than what was needed for our home because I plan to expand and I didn't want to have to replace it. Its been cranking since November (saw some use in Oct) and has kept the house comfortable. will hold a decent size stick, and burn through the night.

Good call on the blower. Every woodstove needs one. It really gets the heat out to the room when you need it.

Any fan will work on an exposed woodstove but would be difficult on an insert. They are worth the extra few bucks.

how big is your liner? if its bigger than 6x6 get a steel liner put in, you can't control the draft with an airtight stove and a big liner.

Don't go by what is "rated" for your space. Always go as big as you can fit and afford. The only difference is how big and long of logs you put in it. Unless you like cutting logs super short and splitting them down to nothing. Big/fat logs just burn longer. go big.

I do a lot of fireplaces, "fireplacextordinair" is what I think is one of the best out there .

Pay attention to RR's advise. Most fireplaces use 12"x12" flues, wood burning stoves require much less. I was in the fire service for over 30 years, a vast majority (over 90%) of chimney fires were fireplace chimneys that were being used with inserts.

I have a Lopi insert I found on craigslist. It has it's pluses and minuses.
Plus: It has a thermal controlled blower so the fan won't blow until the stove is up to tempature and shuts off when the stove gets cold so it's not blowing cold air in the middle of the night when the fire goes out.
Minus: I wish it was a catylitic stove so it would burn longer. My other stove(not an insert) is a Blaze King with a cat and will burn 8 hours on pine and 12 with ash. I use it more than the Lopi because of the wood economics. grin

Money can't buy everything...but, it can buy me a boat.

I am looking at the Lopi right now for myself and didn't think they would cost as much as they do. Nice units though. The automatic blower is a nice feature.

This one is made by US Stove. Is this brand any good ? I've been thinking about getting one.

Chimney Sweep spec my liner for my stove. Got an Olympic liner. Warranty is transferable to another owner and is covered for 3 chimney fires. My stove is an older country flame. Stove was free, new glass and gaskets ran $40. $800 on liner 6 years ago.
