Is it possible that an automatic garage door can malfunction in cold weather? This morning when I hit the remote it opened, but would not close, I had to close it manually.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Check to make sure your sensors are connected. The ones going across the opening of the door. There is an indicator light that will flash OR be solid letting you know there is nothing blocking the door. Number one reason if they won't close.

Sometimes something may fall over when you open it . It doesn't take much to break the beam. It could be a wire loose just check the photo eyes make sure they read each other. I have seen them frost up in extreme cold because the garage is warmer and if the door is left open very long.

Mine has been acting the same as yours during this cold snap. It will always go up but sometimes it will take it a few times to get it to go down. Nothing in the way of my sensors. I attribute it to the severe cold putting unusual pressure on the door itself in the joints and rollers. This cold sux. My heat pump running constant can only keep my house at 66 degrees when it gets this cold for this long.

My indicator lights (green) are solid and not flashing. Nothing fell over. How do you tell if the photo eyes read each other? Would they be a different color or be flashing if not?

I know nothing about door openers, but you could put something between them and see if your light changes?

If it changes, probably not your problem.

Stick your hand in between them, when the beam is broken the light should change color or flash. If it doesn't change, they might have been bumped and the solid green light you see could be indicating a broken beam.

Check your batteries, might be weak and the cold effects them! Mine work down to the deep cold with no problems.

Not trying to change the subject switch it to emergency heat. NOW before people start saying it will eat you up in electric THEY DON"T USE AS MUCH than regular cycle because the unit and fan NEVER shut off in this cold.

Check for ice on the bottom of the door and on the floor. Could be just the sensitivity. If theres ice build up just remove it and unplug motor, plug back in and try the door again.

If your batteries in remote are low often the light on the remote will flash. You can check your manual too, it will tell you. If lights are flashing on motor (depending on sequence)the manual should provide a diagnostic. (Tell you whats wrong.) Good luck.

If you've checked the sensors and no ice build up and all that and still can't figure it out then you are in the same boat as me. Goes up Everytime. Need to hold the button down to get it closed in cold weather. Everything else is functioning fine. My only conclusion is that the aged sensor just doesn't like the cold. I'm waiting for something else to brake and then replace the whole thing.

There are two knobs on the back of the moter 1 for opening force and 1 for closing force turn the closing force knob one 1/4 turn to the + side should fix it. Don't forget to turn it back in the spring its a safety feature. I fix about a doz every cold winter

didn't read all posts but many of the motors have a thermo overload. If the motor got hot from trying to lift the door in the cold, it may have tripped the overload and after it sits for a while, resets and should go down with the remote or the wall switch.

Mine opens and closes fine in this cold snap, just a little sluggish.
