Looking at a small 12 volt, 'motor cycle sized' battery. It comes empty with little plastic vials of acid. I assume it would need to be charged before using.

The question is whether it could be charged 'on location' by hooking it up to a vehicle battery.

With the motor running/charging, maybe?

With the motor off/not charging, yea or nay?

Thanks for any advise,

Charlie

They say to charge but I've used them right away no problems. The bigger concern is to make sure you allow it to sit for at least 20-30 minutes before you put the caps on after filling with acid. You don't want any more bubbles forming when you put the caps on in other words

Thanks, fellas.

Would it continue to take a charge with the motor shut off?

No alternator input, just storage from the larger battery?

only if the larger battery had higher voltage which it is not likely to ,other wise it would just be 2 batteries in parallel

the alternator will push 14 volts most batteries by themselves only read 12.5 or so volts

I have always bought small batteries that said pour in acid and roll. Why can’t you charge it at home on a proper charger and take it?

Thanks, Pete. That was my main concern. smile

bhugo, I could charge it at home on a proper charger, if I was going to be home. I was thinking 'road trip', and doing it in a more remote setting. grin

Thanks for the responses, guys. T-Man ROCKS!
