What brand of straight does a guy buy ,do you spend $140.00 to get a good one or $50.00 . will probably buy new for the first one then may collect a few older ones.

I like the vintage Boker brand. Go on ebay, there are always a ton of vintage razors and the prices aren't bad at all.

Check out whippeddog.com that is a cheap way to get started. You can get a vintage razor, shave ready and strop etc. for under $100. It may not be pretty but it will work. If you like it you can buy more/better. Some guys have lots of razors. I've got one and am happy. Don't spend too much time looking or you'll end up with a collection.

What wax do you use?

None of mine are expensive. It’s the hone that makes the difference. You will need a strop. It doesn’t have to be expensive either. Larry at whippeddog.com sells, cheap ones.

Nessmuck has a nice honing set up. I bet his are honed right.

I would choose a razor from a brand that has been on the market for a while... DoVo, Boker, etc... Or from a site that specializes in straight razors. Whipped dog was mentioned and that would be a good place to start.

Others may disagree, but I would recommend starting with a razor that has a round point. They're easier for a beginner to use.

It’s cool to use Dad’s old razor. I have a,great great grandpas on my wife’s side. Works great. My father in law gave it to me. It’s ancient.

I bought my first razor, a DoVo Best Quality 6/8, from Classic Shaving...

But if I had to do it over I would purchase from Lynn Abrams' site...Straight Razor Designs. He has the same razor that I bought, at the same price. Every new razor you buy from him is made shave-ready and he includes a certificate for one additional free sharpening.

That's a nice deal.

Used to use Firehouse Wax.

I've been wearing it long enough and the hair is stiff enough I just curl it around my finger for 10-15 seconds and it stays like that.

I've dropped two and broken the handles on the tile floor. I keep four in reserve. You'll need a strop, a hone, a mug, a brush.
