This may seem like a stupid question. I am new to trapping beaver. My question is when using conibear traps, by the dam our you better off in front on top or below the dam?

Depends on your set.
Natural crossover-on the bottom of the dam
Dam break-multiple traps well out in front in 2 to 3 feet of water.
Castor set-right on the dam 5 to 10 feet either side of the crossover or small break.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

When I first went to the Carolinas a very accomplished USDA trapper told me always set the top and bottom of the cross over.
And that was very good advice.

Yes, you never know which direction they come from. Double set, double catch possible.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.
