I remember a while back someone talked about the wind switchin on them and it wouldnt be right for their dirthole, but they got lucky and caught. Hows the wind supposed to hit the dirthole? From the backing? Front? Ive never taken wind into consideration since it always changes around here. I just face it the way i think the animal will come along. Could somebody elaborate on this for me?

My thinking is angle and direction of the hole, and one foot guide, will determine where they work hole, Maybe a flat set it would matter more

I think the original poster meant he wanted the dirtholes to be upwind of the animals, so the animals can smell it. If downwind, the animals would pass right on by without smelling the bait and lure. Don't think he meant so much which way the hole faced. Thats my thinking, maybe I'm wrong.

As lure evaporates in "leaks" out of the hole. The wind grabs it and creates a plume of scent. This differs depending on wind strength, air density/moisture etc.

Ever had a set worked from the back side? Next time it happens go back and review which way the wind was blowing that night.

I think placing the set upwind of where the animals are traveling is a must, but having the wind come from the backing of your set and blow across may help as well.

Earlier this winter I hid bait and put a trail cam over it set on video to analyze what the fox does. Every time he came by he would circle down wind of the bait and cautiously approach the bait. When he would grab the bait, he would run a short distance and eat it elsewhere. Every time he approached it would be from the down wind side no matter the wind direction.

My thinking is that if the dirt hole is set so the animal can approach and work the set from down wind side, he may feel more comfortable approaching the set and he is less likely to work the set from the back or the side.

Just my thoughts.

A good lure will hang low and stick to stuff, here the wind is usually out of the west but when weather moves in it is east- or south, either way they should pick it up,

I think the wind changes direction often enough that if you had to be perfect to make a catch every time a K-9 came by it would be nearly impossible to catch a fox or coyote. The best example I can give would be a fence row running north and south. In this wide open wind swept countryside, our wind is typically out of the southwest. This puts our coyotes hunting the east or down wind side of the fence. Let’s say I can only trap the west side of this fence and the best backing or only backing available is to the east of the trap bed. This puts everything opposite of ideal, as far as the wind is concerned. Ideally I would trap the down wind side ( east ) of the fence, with my trap bedded down wind of my hole or pipe or charred wood ......... but I can’t. I can only trap the WRONG side of the fence according to the wind and conventional wisdom. According to the sign at this fence the coyote are traveling the east side of the fence about 99% of the time yet I catch them every year for the last 27 years on the wrong side of the fence . Not one not two but up to six coyote a year working the set with they’er backs to the wind.

I guess my point is put a smell that they like UP wind of where they are going to be , bed your trap solid and let them work the set !
