I know an Extreme weather change effects hunting and fishing. I have done well right before a front comes thru and then have to wait a few days later for things to level out some, but how does a major cold front impact coons? We have already had some extreme weather for "down here", drop from 50* to 24* over night! before the change I do really well. The morning of the cold front I have been Zeroing out! like they just den up for a few days. Tonight we are looking at going down to 16* w/ ice and possible snow. I'm tempted to not reset this afternoon and wait it out. I ran my traps this morning b4 work and didn't have a single piece of cat food or one sardine or one grain of corn missing! The spot I am trapping is usually good for 2 or 3 a night at the worst. thx, "Bayou"

Not as far south as you but the coon in my neck of the woods stay denned up pretty much anytime the temp gets in the 20s. And when it warms back up, it seems to take a day or two to get them moving again. Your mileage may vary.

i dont expect to see any coon or possum movement for the next couple days till it warms back up. Its suppose to be 21 here for a couple nights and that seems to shut them down. k9s slow down too for me. I know plenty of northern guys catch in the snow, but i think the coyotes around here migrate to florida for a few days when it drops down like its about to. I didnt reset any sets today that made catches. I will continue to do my daily checks, but i will wait till this cold snap passes before i get everything up and going again.

Same here, had one Saturday and three Sunday morning then zero Monday. Pulled/tripped everything on Monday to wait it out. I'm just a little north of you.

Well, I ran my on test last night. I had already tripped everything and was going to wait it out, "as suggested", but I just had to see for myself. So I just re-set 6 of my DP's that were in prime spots, and 6 boxes that have been the best producers. I had 1 Grinner! no baits missing, no tracks in the snow, I didn't even see a deer track in any of the roads from last night. So my country boy research has concluded that "extreme cold weather in the South aint good for trapping" !

I'm up here but I notice the possums start to move right away with the coons moving the following evening.

We had a good dusting of snow last night, and the only thing in my traps this morning was a opossum, go figure. But on the bright side I know my sets are working.

It was 7 with a -7 wind chill when I left the house this morning and had a 50 cent red coyote. I usually have little or no movement when it is cold here and only saw 1 track this morning. Most seem to hole up for several days but everything seems to move the first warm day. Right now I just have traps and snares right by my house so I just leave them set. I have been trying to get out to a 200 acre property on the mountain
for a couple weeks but all the water has been froze up but not safe to walk on and they have several beavers and otters they want rid of. Looks like it might finally get warm enough to clear the ponds this weekend. 50 degree light rain seems to be the best for everything here.

had one possum covered in icicles and an angry male coyote this morning. Had about 3 other traps that were set off with no catches. The one i inspected had a chunk of ice holding the jaws open. pretty sure the set off traps were coyote misses. I know 2 were coyotes, i followed fresh tracks straight to the empty traps. I dont use peat or antifreeze cause in about 3 days it will be back up to 70 degrees and tank tops again. I didnt expect anything this morning, so i guess i wont expect anything again tonight and we will see what happens. I think about all the ice chunks are melted now so pretty sure traps will be frozen down in place lol.

With another cold 16* night ahead I made sure I tripped all traps and moved body grips out of boxes. Figured if something was scrounging for food in this weather they deserved a free meal. On my way back out of the woods I spotted what seemed to be a herd of penguins! My 1st reaction was I must be suffering from hypothermia and I had to be hallucinating! But then I saw that they were being chased by a polar bear and I realized I was ok! One of the penguins dropped a map of Louisiana and had circled Galliano, LA.! Is their a penguin recipie in the cajun cookbook??? I wonder if Bud G. knows what the daily bag limit is on penguins??? It's just too cold down here!

Sounds like it's too cold for the trapper. The critters are ok.

seem to be moving a little bit still in this cold. Probably would have better luck when i rebait and rebed a few traps once it thaws. This is probably one of the heaviest (weight) coyotes ive ever caught. Made me cuss a little when i picked him up.

at 1100 today there were several does in the back of the fields out grazing and a decent buck crossed the road in front of me. Hunters where i trap are reporting the bucks running does hard right now. been seeing a few yotes out in the fields too around lunch. Seems like they are all waiting until it warms up a little to get out and about.

Caught most everything lately with a standard big dirthole with some tainted bobcat meat and beaver parts down the hole. nothing special.

I had 11 this morning and this guy in a snare. He was neck caught but must not have fought it and it was a cam lock. Thickest fur I have ever seen on one here.

there wasnt full coverage of white stuff everywhere here but where it did stick i found a couple fresh tracks and found out where they were traveling...i saw that a few traps need to be moved a few yards. I was close, but not close enough, as in wrong side of a fencerow or road. next few days im gonna be adjusting some sets and i expect to connect with the few that are coming by. If i could have actual powdery snow on the ground for a few days and let them travel it so i could actually see where they are moving i could make vast improvements in my catch rate.
