i know where a bigger one is. caught him by the foot in a bush hook once. I looked at my little aluminum boat with my dog going nuts already and decided i couldnt even lift him let alone keep it in the boat till i got home so i pulled out the hook and let him go. Had to stop setting hooks in that cypress cause he would always eat anything i caught.

That could make a guy lose a toe, or a foot or something not good!

They can breathe water through their tailpipe. Butt lungs, if you will.

My maternal Grandfather had a wood pole with a blunt metal spike on one end and a metal hook on the other end. Once it was cold enough to form a little skim ice, my Grandfather would wade around looking for springs. Snapping turtles would bury into the bottom of the canals and lakes by the springs. He would probe the soft bottom with the blunt end and when he heard the hollow thud, made by hitting a snapping turtle's shell, he would turn the pole around and work the hook up and down, towards where the turtle was, until he got the hook under the edge of the shell. Once he hooked the edge of the shell, he would pull the turtle out of the mud and water.

Grandpa caught very large numbers of snapping turtles this way. Sometimes he caught dozens, by just one spring, buried in right next to each other.

KeithC-I have collected 3 of those turtle hooks. My best one is a very long, about 5 foot taper of pretty stout sheet metal on one side, and the hook is on the other. Really a cool bit of River history!

Don't think I would try that with Wolfie's little turtle friend, though.

That could be a expensive supper in most states, not a common snapper it alligator snapper. I would guess 80 to 100 pounds of it to.

he is probably in more danger of hypothermia if the ice breaks , if it is cold enough for ice the turtle would be hibernating.

it'd bite your achilles tendon and sit there and slowly devour you cause you can't run away.i'd rather pet a rabid pit bulls belly than be in a swamp with that thing.they are all just laying low in the swamps and ponds waiting to take over the world.don't be mad at me when i say i told ya so.

I don't know, If I had a 200 pound fella fall on me, I think I would not only wake up, but be mad too!
